Winning Cliburn Contest Doesn't Always Bring Fame The lucky pianist will win $20 000 in cash, plus concert engagements and recording opportunities Filippo Gamba (28), Germany's jan Gottlieb jiracek (24), the United States' Jon http://www.lubbockonline.com/news/060697/winning.htm
Extractions: Winning Cliburn contest doesn't always bring fame LA Times-Washington Post News Service Quick. What do Ralph Votapek, Vladimir Viardo and Simone Pedroni have in common? All won first prize in the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, enjoyed bursts of fame and now languish in those fields of obscurity known as ''whatever happened to ... ?'' This Sunday in Fort Worth, the Cliburn will crown a first-prize winner for the 10th time since the competition began in 1962. The lucky pianist will win $20,000 in cash, plus concert engagements and recording opportunities worth almost $250,000. And the second-and third-prize winners, as well as the three other pianists named as finalists late Monday, will scarcely come away empty-handed in this richest of all international music competitions. But there's one thing the six finalists cannot expect to win Sunday evening: lasting fame. If the law of averages holds, the lucky young man or woman who is the winner - five Cliburn finalists are male, one female - will be forgotten in a few years, another casualty laid to rest in the crowded graveyard of Cliburn winners. That only one first-prize winner in nine Cliburns - Radu Lupu (1966) - has gone on to a major international career does not call the judgments of the contests' juries in doubt. It is merely to say that it has been a long time since winning a major international competition was a predictor of lasting fame or even of a substantial performing career. There are simply so many competitions - literally hundreds - that a first prize, even in a competition as prestigious as the Cliburn, has ceased to have much meaning.

Extractions: In their next recital, the Durban-based Friends of Music will host the acclaimed 27 year old German pianist Jan Gottlieb Jiracek who was recently described by BBC Music Magazine as one of the leading pianists of his generation. Born into a German-Czechoslovakian family of musicians, he won first prize at the Steinway Competition in Hamburg at the age of ten, and made his formal debut the following year in his hometown of Hanover, performing a piano concerto by Mozart. He also won the top prize at both the 1996 Busoni Competition and the 1996 Maria Canals Competition. Mr Jiracek has since performed extensively throughout Europe, including recitals at the Herkulessaal in Munich, Steinway Hall in London, Salle Cortot in Paris, Palau de la musica in Barcelona, Tonhalle in Zurich, Musikhalle in Hamburg and the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, as well as orchestral appearances with the Berlin and St. Petersburg Philharmonics, Cologne Chamber Orchestra, and the Northern Sinfonia of England. Following his North American debut at the tenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 1997, where he was a favourite of critics and audiences alike, he was immediately asked to join Community Concerts artist roster. Together with his engagements as winner of that competition, this led to more than 40 engagements throughout the United States in the 1998-99 season. This period saw him giving recitals at the Tilles Centre at Long Island University, the University of Vermont Lane Series, and Spivey Hall in Atlanta. He also performed with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra at the recently opened Nancy Lee and Perry R. Bass Performance Hall in October 1998, performing three piano concertos, including Gershwins

Extractions: As his name suggests, 27-year-old Jan Gottlieb Jiracek has a German-Czech background. This tall, blonde young man has built up an imposing reputation in Europe and America, and at his Durban recital the first notes of Beethoven's Op 22 Sonata confirmed his virtuoso quality. This is one of the master's lesser known sonatas, though Beethoven himself was very proud of it; "It washes itself", he declared, using a German idiom which in modern parlance means it's got what it takes. It is a fine work and it was given a brilliant performance by the visiting pianist, almost too brilliant at times, one felt. The minuet of the sonata is a graceful, almost ingenuous little piece, but Jiracek played it as if he were delivering an etude by Chopin or Liszt. But his performance as a whole generated much enthusiasm from the audience. The pianist seemed more at home in Schumann's exuberant Etudes Symphoniques , making light of the formidable technical difficulties of the music. For me, however, the finest playing of the evening came in Ravel's
