Extractions: In 1961 Philips Phonographische Industrie in Baarn, The Netherlands bought the Chicago based record company Mercury. In Europe EMI had a contract with Mercury for distribution and also for the co-operation regarding new recordings. Philips had to respect the EMI contract and were naturally obstructed by it until it expired at the end of 1963. There were at the time some problems concerning the sales of Mercury Living Presence releases in other European countries because Philips wanted to start distributing their newly acquired label. Therefore Philips could only fully benefit from its purchase from 1963 on. What happened to the catalogue of the well known company for which Bob Fine, Wilma Cozart Fine and Robert Eberenz made the Living Presence recordings which were mastered by George Piros? In June, 2000, she was the Ojai Festival's featured solo recitalist, performing works by Thomas Adès, George Benjamin, and Pierre Boulez. She was a longtime member of the California E.A.R. Extractions: This all started with a "Consumer Guide" I wrote for the Village Voice, New York's big alternative weekly. I listened to 17 recordings of this suddenly popular concerto, and wrote 17 quick paragraphs, with a grade attached to each one. Poor David Helfgott got an F; Vladimir Horowitz got an A, for his version with Fritz Reiner conducting. (Though a later Horowitz release, a live performance with Eugene Ormandy, only got C+.) You can read this adventure, right here on this site. Much later and by a happy coincidence I was asked to write about the concerto once again, this time for the Los Angeles Times. In fact, I was asked to defend it against critical attacks, which I was happy to do. The more I listened to it, for my Voice consumer guide, the more I loved it. And I enlisted two very articulate pianists to help me defend it Alexander Toradze, and Byron Janis. This piece, too, is available here But you want to hear the music my comparisons of six pianists playing the same Rach 3 excerpt. Extractions: From true classical "nuts" who want every inflection of an artist's performance to be spot on -to- your friend who never wants to listen to anything classical. It is an album which can be "paid attention to" and which will yeild invaluable returns in terms of Nathaniel and Doris' artistic abilities. It can also be "ignored" and one will simply be lost in a beautiful "wash" of sounds. Everyone should own a copy for those quiet moments shared with your most intimate friend, simply relax and let the worries of the day dissipate into the atmosphere.
