Update (May 29, 2003). For more information, visit the Cantori New York Web site May 9, 2003 From the Polar Music Prize newsletter: The Polar Music Prize will be presented on Monday for the twelfth consecutive year. The prizewinner this year is Keith Jarrett. The prize money is one million Swedish Crowns (approx USD 125.000 or EURO 110.000). Keith Jarrett will receive his prize from His Majesty The King of Sweden during a nationally-televised ceremony at Berwaldhallen, Stockholm. Her Majesty The Queen, HRH Crown Princess Victoria, HRH Princess Lilian, Deputy Prime Minister Margareta Winberg and Foreign Minister Anna Lindh will also join the many dignitaries and celebrities from industry, show business and media attending the event. The Polar Music Prize is the world's most unique and prestigious prize and was founded by Stig "Stikkan" Anderson through the donation he gave to The Royal Swedish Academy of Music. Anderson created the prize to recognize and honour outstanding achievements in music, at the same time as bringing together the different worlds of music. Another vision he had is being realised more and more each year. He wanted to see a celebration of music as such by using music and musically-inspired functions lasting several days. During the weekend preceding the ceremony, Polar Music Prize Days will take place for the first time this year. At the Stockholm Cultural Centre (Kulturhuset), the general public can enjoy seminars, concerts and an exhibition on the life and career of Keith Jarrett. This year's programme shown below illustrates how Stig Anderson's visions are being realised more and more.

Festival de.version 14th Chopin Festival (20-23 August 1998) AN UPLIFTING FESTIVAL OF MUSIC ORGANISED BY THE VIENNA INTERNATIONAL CHOPIN SOCIETY IN THE GAMING CHARTERHOUSE May the borrowed phase "Affabre Cincinui" (ideal resonance), which is the name of a group of singers that will be mentioned later, stand over the 14th Chopin Festival (20-23 August 1998). The charm of the Lower Austrian landscape and the perfectly restored Charterhouse create an ideal environment for edifying resonance of all kinds. As a city person, greeted by many friendly inhabitants of Gaming, one feels motivated to respond in the same manner and to cast off the city armour. In the church of the Charterhouse the internationally renowned pianist, Ingeborg Baldaszti, played Chopin's piano concerto No.2 accompanied by the Nieder-österreichische Tonkünstlerorchester (Lower Austrian Musicians' Orchestra) conducted by Tadeusz Strugala. The orchestra introduction flourished "on the wings of song" and the piano assisted with impressive virtuoso passages. The second movement belongs surely to the most wonderful musical inspirations in which the pianist, playing from her heart, was able to give an unusually mature performance which fascinated and moved the music lovers. Ingeborg Baldaszti performed the effective final movement with immense technical ability.

Byggnaden ligger mittemot slottet Wawel.

(Polonia of the Eastern Great Lakes) NEWSBITES April 2004 by MICHAEL PIETRUSZKA DYNGUS DAY 2004 - This year April 12 will mark one of WNY Polonia's most visible and enjoyable ethnic celebrations - Dyngus Day. For those not familiar with this holiday, Dyngus Day, the day after Easter also known as "Wet Monday", started in Poland as a way to provide a release after the 40 days of self-denial and prayer of Lent. Tradition says that the custom goes back to the Middle Ages when men doused women with water to symbolize a renewed Baptism, but a more likely scenario involves young men who wanted to attract the notice of young ladies as the flowers of Spring began to bloom. The young men threw water and hit the women on the legs with pussy willows to get their attention. Now this tradition continues in WNY with a day of Polish food, polka music and fun.
