TITANIC OPERATIC LIZST An interesting unpublished version of Meyerbeer's 'Les Huguenots' is even more enticing and contains a better arrangement than the previous versions, something which is espoused in Howard's scholarly notes. Another 'extra' version of Bellini's 'La Sonnambula' appears here and one can only marvel at the height of Lizst's inspiration and capability in making such music sound so utterly pianistic. There is also Russian charm and a sense of joie de vivre in the 'Russlan' transcription. The 'Valse et Caprice' contains elements of Lizst's better style, all fused into such a charming whole that I was almost singing the tunes after a few repeated listens. Howard's marvelous playing adds to the excitement and virility of the piece. This brings us to the inimitable arrangement of Wagner's 'Tannhauser' Overture. It is quite amazing to realize how such a vividly orchestral work can sound so incredibly beautiful in a pianistic guise. Howard's slow tempo adds to to the grandeur and nobility of the piece, thus creating an unforgettable sensation in the middle of the Pilgrim's Chorus theme and the headlong rush into the final chords. After such fireworks, the somewhat overlong and occasionally boorish melodies of 'I Puritani' may seem to sound cheap by comparison but repeated listening will make one appreciate this titanic music much more. At times it seems that these arrangements rather grow on you!
Extractions: Hyperion's magnificent and truly laudable Lisztcycle approaches the finishing line with this mammoth treasure trove of hidden delights that will enthuse all lovers of the piano. Indeed Leslie Howard waxes lyrical about most of the pieces in his scholarly notes, so if he is eager then why shouldn't we be so too? The Grande Fantasie that heralds the first disc is truly titanic, here Lisztmatches Paganini in his wizardry and it would be idiotic not to say that Howard's performance is masterly in every respect. The short Waltzes and Polonaise are also brilliantly done although one must admit that most of these shorter works are rather trivial. However the 2 nd Legend entitled, 'St Francis de Paule walks on water' is indeed pianistic impressionism at it's finest and contains much that is memorable and hauntingly beautiful. Other works which left a profound impression on me and that emanated from the first disc where the short but thoroughly charming 'Wallenstein's Lake' and the poetically haunting; 'The Cypresses of the Ville d'Este', an intoxicating tone poem of miraculous beauty. The short Variations on Paganini's Carnival in Venice' are also vintage Lisztwith devilish double-stops and glissandos, more than a match for Howard's scintillating virtuosity.

Selznick made another important contribution to American films by introducing Ingrid Bergman in her first English-speaking movie, Intermezzo (1939). Selznick assistant Kay Brown had seen an earlier Swedish version of the film, also starring Bergman, and the producer dispatched her to Stockholm to secure the rights for an American remake. After Brown returned to New York with the screenplay rights, Selznick had an afterthought and sent her once again to Sweden, this time with instructions to sign the leading lady to a contract. According to Selznick biographer Bob Thomas, Bergman had turned down other Hollywood offers from fast-talking Hollywood types but was impressed by Brown's personality, telling her, "You're so sweet and human that anyone you work for couldn't be nearly as crazy as I expected." She eventually signed with Selznick, although stipulating that she would commit to only one film before deciding whether she wanted to stay in Hollywood.

Either they have and Howard makes these things sound better than their intrinsic musical merit, or Liszt is simply an uncommonly interesting musical mind. I suspect a bit of both. The works on the program tell us much about the life of a nineteenth-century piano virtuoso. Our own concert tastes seem positively dour beside those of our forebears. Elaborations of popular songs and dances, opera paraphrases, pieces d'occasion, and especially the variations on "national airs" all crowded the kit bag. The traveling virtuoso was not only the priest of high culture, but pretty much the juke box and (with the "monster concert") t.v. as well. S. Frederick Starr lays out much of this in his recent study of Gottschalk. The two marchesthe second Hungarian and the one written for Goethe's birthdaylack the manic passage work of the typical Lisztian showstopper and really seem sketches for orchestral works, and, indeed, the composer orchestrated both. The Sturmmarsch has the energy of Berlioz's Racozky. Howard here manages to suggest the orchestra through a discreet variety of touch and color. The festival march begins like gangbusters with two stunning harmonic ideas, but soon lapses into the less-than-routine. Not even Howard can save it.
