Extractions: OVERALL NOISE RATING: 3 (After 20 years of the "Courtesy Campaign", I have to admit, people still have to be reminded that it is a Concert Mortal Sin to leave before the final encore - please put sufficient parking coupons for your cars the next time...) The Noise Rating Index is a partially-objective measurement of pager and handphone blasts, 9pm and 10pm watch beeps, coughing-during-the-pianissimo-bits, intra-audience conversation and other mind-bogglingly inept noises emitted in the concert hall during actual performance of music. It is measured on a scale of to 5, in increasing annoyance. Johann D'Souza Some people might not know this but the pianist Leslie Howard (left) has had a full list (pardon the pun) of things to do in the last 15 years. He has literally lived the life of Liszt, writing, researching, playing, recording (OK, maybe Liszt couldn't do this) and championing his music. I was told that for every CD he has recorded he has personally done the research for the material in the album sleeves. (There are about 94 discs worth on Hyperion - click here for Hyperion's Liszt Index ). The good news is that after the project (expected to end in the year 2000) he is going to combine all the material into a book (publishers please reserve a copy for me).

He studied at the USC School of Music and with Leon Fleischer and Reginald Stewart at Santa Barbara's Music Academy of the West. He developed a strong affinity for the string orchestra. However, despite his love for the classical repertoire, James was inevitably drawn to pop music. In the early 70's a stint with an L.A. based band, "Mama Lion" was followed by 2 solo albums - JNH (1974) and James Newton Howard and friends in 1984. The latter was "commissioned by Yamaha to demo its new synths"

Extractions: Brownlee Walker, who won a place five years ago to study classical piano at the prestigious Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, is the great-grandson of one of Zimbabwe's earliest white settlers. His family ran a large farm near Bulawayo in the south of the country, but last Easter the property was overrun by supporters of President Robert Mugabe. His parents and brother have since fled the country. As the son of a prominent former landowner, Brownlee Walker believes that his surname alone is likely to ensure he is harassed and possibly detained if he goes back to Zimbabwe. What is more, in recent months the accomplished accompanist has attended several protest events organised in London by exiled members of the opposition group, the Movement for Democratic Change or MDC.

ELLIOT'S NORTH AMERICAN GREAT BOOKS TOURCOMING TO A BOOK STORE NEAR YOU As a pianist who may not be a colleague of Mr. Howard's, but rather a student (who worked with him in Italy), I must defend my friend, the fine virtuoso Leslie Howard. He may not always be the most scintillating pianist, but his interpretations are marked by enormous integrity and respect for the text, and also, therefore, for Liszt's stye, which is indeed crystallized in the score. Not for Mr. Howard are the sloppy rumblings of pianists who falsely interject their opinion on the scores, which are so plain and clear. It is true that Horowitz is less faithful to the score, but he is diabolically exciting when he departs from it. Howard, on the other hand, does nothing of the sort, and indeed gives us some magnificent readings of repertoire like the Grosses Konzertsolo, the Weinen Klagen Prelude and Variations, and the Fantasy and Fugue on BACH. He is an important pianist, no matter what some of these sixth-rate critics say, and I am very happy to say this.
Extractions: "My piano is to me what his vessel is to the sailor, his horse to the Arab," wrote Franz Liszt (1811-1886). "I confided to it all my desires, my dreams, my joys, and my sorrows. Its strings vibrated to my emotions, and its keys obeyed my every caprice." Liszt's piano works constitute a musical autobiography that until now has been incomplete. Despite the great popularity of a few works such as the B Minor Sonata, the Hungarian Rhapsodies, and the Liebestraum No. 3, hundreds more have been either forgotten or lost. Since 1986 a project of unprecedented dimensions has been rescuing this vast body of piano music from obscurity. Pianist Leslie Howard-an acclaimed keyboard virtuoso, Lisztian scholar, and president of the British Liszt Society-has been recording Liszt's complete piano works for Hyperion Records. Twenty-six volumes have already appeared, and at least twenty-five more are planned before the end of the century-more than seventy CDs in all. "It has been attempted several times," Howard says, "but nobody's ever got anywhere near finishing it. It's a big responsibility." Fanfare magazine has described the Howard cycle as "one of the most imposing recording landmarks of the century."

Extractions: "Leslie Howard" (1893 - 1943) was a British film actor of Hungarian descent. Born "Leslie Howard Steiner" in London, Howard's classic good looks won him his first screen role in a 1914 silent film, following which he served in World War I, his military career being cut short by injury. Howard proceeded to play stiff-upper-lipped Englishmen in films such as ''The Scarlet Pimpernel'' (1934), ''Pygmalion'' (1938) (in which he played Professor Higgins), and ''Pimpernel Smith'' (1941). This image helped win him the role of Ashley Wilkes in ''Gone With the Wind'' (1939), but he was uncomfortable with Hollywood and returned to Britain to help with the war effort. In 1943, he visited Lisbon (some say on a secret mission), and, on the return flight, his plane was shot down by enemy forces, possibly because the Germans believed the prime minister, Winston Churchill, to be on board. The British actor Ronald Howard was his son.
