What exactly is so fascinating for you about Soler? There is still no final edition of Solers sonatas as the research on his music has not yet been completed. There were indeed some printing errors, but for me the fascination lay in the non-printing errors". There was also this simplicity, a hidden sensuality something entirely new which captured me. I thought to myself: Why is this wonderful music played so rarely in public? And, last but not least, I was fascinated by Solers life in a monastery, a life in seclusion or even isolation. At that time, I could identify with that kind of life, because during my intensive studies I lead a similar life, I was very much concentrated on myself. The work with Solers music gave some totally new impulses" to me. Soler uses church modes which I have always loved. Then one discovers very modern harmonies, which are sometimes even Satie-like (e.g. Sonata d-minor S.R. 24).

I can shed some light on Juliana Markova though not her present whereabouts or career (if still active). Her teachers included Ilonka Decker-Kuszler in Milan (a Hungarian whose pupils included Annie Fischer, Edith Farnadi, Enrica Cavallo and Tiziana Moneta, just to list some of the women). I myself studied with Ilonka Deckers 1975-1992 and Markova had gone away by that time. Mme Deckers tried to keep in contact with former pupils and Markova was mentioned from time to time. I recall that she sent Mme Deckers a tape of a performance she gave of Rachmaninov 2 with the Chicago SO under Janos Ferencsik, this would be in the early 1980s. At about this time she also gave Tchaikovsky 1 with one of the London orchestras. Since she was playing in England at that time, it is perfectly possible that she stood in for an indisposed Nina Milkina.

Soler: Sonatas - Antonio Soler, Marie-Luise Hinrichs Music CDs I had never heard of marieluise hinrichs but I m wondering why. Thiswoman is a superb pianist. The thing that strikes one first http://www.boondocksnet.com/cb/apfh-item_id-B000031W0F-search_type-AsinSearch-lo
Extractions: Soler was almost half a century younger than Domenico Scarlatti with whom he is most often compared. Indeed he studied with Scarlatti. But he came along at a time when the contrapuntal baroque style was giving way to the oncoming 'style galant' (sometimes called 'rococo') and thus there is less counterpoint. He is Spanish through and through and the Spanish melorhythms are apparent in all he wrote. Much of the music on this CD is gently melancholic and in minor keys, although there are a number of faster, brighter pieces. I had never heard of Marie-Luise Hinrichs but I'm wondering why. This woman is a superb pianist. The thing that strikes one first is her touch; she has a striking ability to coax lovely tone from her piano, and she possesses a velvety legato when required. Her playing has a sensuosity with no need to be propped up by speedy virtuosity, although she certainly has keyboard technique to spare. Another way of saying this is that she is making music, not showing off.
