Extractions: Tim http://intrepidjazz.tripod.com FINGERPICK VS FLATPICK by Mark Stefani This edition of "Coach's Corner" deals with a guitarist's right-hand philosophy, or more specifically the issue of whether to rely more on the use of a flatpick or your fingers. It's a subject that warrants adequate discussion, because it truly effects your musicianship, at least from the technical side of the coin. You know, I understandably get asked about this topic fairly often. Sometimes it's just from a student's general curiosity, but it occasionally stems from people being aware of my classical background, and wondering what effect it's had on handling other musical styles. To be perfectly honest, my right-hand technique is something that I sort of take for granted nowadays, but maybe that's because I've logged so much time refining that ability throughout my career. Let's talk about the advantages of each approach, and see if we can draw some conclusions that will help you broaden your own technical horizons. For chord-melody work, fingerstyle is clearly a superior way to go. Think about it. You've got four to five times the amount of horsepower compared to a pick, plus you never have to worry about muting strings with your left-hand fingers. And there's just something about the "natural" feel of flesh on strings that defies description. So where does that leave us? Easy answer.

Extractions: The Music Festival Is Under Way The Music Festival of the Hamptons bursts upon the scene tomorrow evening with its gala opening dinner and concert by the Elysium String Quartet. Thereafter the festival tent, moored in the grass meadows off Snake Hollow Road in Bridgehampton, will be host to 16 concerts (except for a few at Guild Hall), featuring music from Bach to Barber, Paganini to Poulenc. Saturday will see the first of the festival's family concerts, featuring the Stoltzman family, at 5 p.m. Richard Stoltzman, one of the world's most renowned clarinetists, will be joined by his daughter, Maggie, on piano, and son, Peter, on jazz piano, in works by Bach, Debussy, Poulenc, Gershwin, Thelonious Monk, and others. Children are welcomed. Gershwin Satires Later that evening, at 8 p.m., the hour of the evening concerts, "Mr. Gershwin Goes to Washington," will be presented for the first time since its production at Carnegie Hall. Songs taken from three Gershwin satires have been assembled in a new narrative by Lawrence Maslon based on the original libretti. Steve Blier, founder of the New York Festival of Song, will direct and play the piano for Anna Bergman and Maureen Brennan, sopranos, David Garrison, tenor, and John Hancock, baritone. George Plimpton will play himself as a newsman.

WIPAC History This was followed by a stunning performance of great works of Ravelby pianist eric himy on October 19 (see photos under Highlights). http://www.wipac.org/history.html
Extractions: Eric Himy History In January 2001, John Gardecki, a resident pianist of Middleburg, Virginia, joined the ranks of accomplished top-level amateur pianists who competed at Concours des Grands Amateurs de Piano in Paris, France. After his Paris performance, he competed in the 2nd Van Cliburn International Piano Amateur Competition at Fort Worth, Texas, and received very encouraging and positive feedback on his piano playing. The Paris and Forth Worth experience motivated and inspired John and his wife, Chateau, to bring this kind of competition to Washington D.C. They presented the idea to close friends and were very encouraged by their enthusiastic responses. Shortly thereafter, an Executive Board was assembled from fellow music enthusiasts who share the same strong passion for classical piano music and who understand the important role it plays in elevating the cultural life of a community.
