Packaged in an attractive aquamarine, the series pays homage not only to the composers but to performers who have played an important role in the discovery of music from the Middle Ages to the beginning of the 19th century. The subtitle of this disc, first released in 1995, gives a fuller indication of the concept: Mass for the Feast of St. Isidore of Seville Missa Mille regretz, published in 1544. The performances are more sober and low key than one might have expected and the result is unexpectedly like a reflective philosophical discourse on love, death and the other profound dimensions of the soul that Schubert was attracted to. Assuming he would have welcomed orchestrations of his songs at all (the concert begins with his own orchestration of a song from his Rosamunde incidental music), Schubert would have been pleased to welcome the motley but very distinguished crew assembled for this recording, including Britten, Liszt, Brahms, Reger, Berlioz, Webern and Offenbach. Extractions: Hyperion CDA67440 74m DDD The famed Bachian pianist, Angela Hewitt now turns her attention to Francois Couperin, one of the greatest composers from the time of Louis XIV. These collections of keyboard works are perhaps better suited to the fortepiano but the indefatigable Hewitt plays with unabashed conviction throughout and also brings a noble pathos to the music. Indeed, I was bowled over by the beautiful melodies that inform these works and really felt that Couperin reached supreme heights of mastery in these keyboard works. One can enjoy the disc straight through; such is the pull of the music on offer here. Finally, there is an exquisite painting entitled 'The Grape Harvest' on the front cover whilst the recording is as fine as one could wish. In short, another winner from Angela Hewitt. French Suites By Angela Hewitt At Jsbach.org Jordan Sayers said angela hewitt has quickly become my favorite contemporarypianist due to her exquisite recordings of Bach s keyboard works. http://www.jsbach.org/hewittfrenchsuites.html
Extractions: Prelude and Fugue: Format: Compact Disc Record Label: Hyperion Catalog Number: Year Released/Recorded: Total Playing Time: Comments: Caroline Watkins said: I'd have paid Hyperion's price just for the French Suites! Angela Hewitt has made these 2 CD's even more worthy by adding all 18 Little Preludes, the Prelude and Fugue in A minor, and the Sonata in D minor. The Sonata is very interesting because it is Bach's transcriptions of one of the solo violin works. I'm especially pleased, as a beginning/intermediate pianist, to have such a sympathethic recording of the Little Preludes. Ms. Hewitt's recording of the Inventions and Sinfonias is also excellent. Jordan Sayers said: Angela Hewitt has quickly become my favorite contemporary pianist due to her exquisite recordings of Bach's keyboard works. One of my pet-peeves with any keyboard recording (whether it be piano, harpsichord, clavichord) is the sound engineering. Thus far, I can not find fault with any of the several Hewitt cds I own: the microphone distance, reverb, etc. are perfect, better than most cds (and I have nearly nine-hundred) This two-disc set also includes Sonata in D Minor (BWV 964), the Twelve and Six Little Preludes (which never sounded so nice on piano) and Prelude and Fugue in A Minor (BWV 894). From my listening experience, one can't go wrong with any of Hewitt's Bach recordings.
THE GODFREY HEWITT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP He was the father of the internationallyacclaimed Canadian concert pianist AngelaHewitt, and the major event in support of this fund takes place on March 21 http://rcco-ottawa.ca/hewitt.html
Extractions: To encourage and benefit Canadian students in organ performance, and as a memorial to Dr. Godfrey Hewitt who was Organist and Choir Director of Christ Church Cathedral, Ottawa, from 1931 to 1980, the RCCO is raising $100,000 to provide a major new music scholarship in organ performance. This scholarship, proposed to be worth $5,000 annually, will be awarded to advanced Canadian organ students beginning in 2005. Over $60,000 has already been raised. The fund will be administered by the RCCO to ensure that there is no denominational association with the awarding of the scholarship. The Godfrey Hewitt Memorial Scholarship is intended to increase the number of highly-trained organists in Canada, not only to serve as organists in churches, universities, and concert halls, but also to teach future generations of organ students. Qualified organists at the concert level are now becoming scarce in Canada: after the organ teachers who are presently active retire over the next fifteen years, there is a dangerous possibility that there will no longer be opportunities for Canadian students to study organ performance except in the largest centres. It is important that we encourage brilliant young musicians to continue with advanced organ studies. The Godfrey Hewitt Memorial Scholarship will both honour the memory of a great Canadian musician, and will also encourage young Canadians to undertake such advanced studies in organ performance. The other such general organ performance scholarship in Canada, the John Goss Scholarship, is offered through the Royal Canadian College of Organists (National Office): it is offered only every second year, and its value has dropped in 2004 from $5,000 to $4,000, and it is mandated to be offered for studies outside Canada.
