Bach Arrangements - Johann Sebastian Bach , Angela Hewitt Here we have one of our finest Bach players, the elegant Canadian pianist AngelaHewitt, in a program of transcriptions and arrangements by a veritable whos http://www.classicalmusicreview.com/Bach_Arrangements_B00005N8CU.html
Extractions: Bach transcriptions seem to be making a bit of a comeback, but a couple of generations ago they were common fare, both in piano recitals and orchestral programs. Bach-Busoni was the most common hyphenized Bach but lots of other people tried their hand at transcribing his music, up to and including the Swingle Singers. Here we have one of our finest Bach players, the elegant Canadian pianist Angela Hewitt, in a program of transcriptions and arrangements by a veritable whos-who of former greatsWilhelm Kempff, William Walton, Harold Bauer, Eugen dAlbert, Myra Hess, John Ireland, Harriet Cohen. Those names conjure up an era preserved for us, thank God, by recordings. Ms Hewitt even contributes three of her own transcriptions from the Orgelb¼chlein. The playing is, of course, elegant, musical, even thrilling in places. Some old favorites are hereDame Myras Jesu, joy of mans desiring, dAlberts monumental Passacaglia in c minor, BWV 582. But there are some transcriptions Id never heard beforeLord Bernerss In dulci jubilo, Bauers scrumptious Die Seele ruht in Jesu H¤nden. Altogether a worthy program in the lifelike sound Hyperion always seems to provide for its stable of wonderful pianists. Indeed, I cant think of a single criticism Id want to make.

Extractions: London's South Bank International Piano Series Goldberg Variations for our eager appraisal. of the . Such evangelistic zeal is indeed to be welcomed, but, whereas Bach's music works especially well on the modern piano, I am not quite so sure that Couperin's much more elaborately 'orchestrated' music sits quite so comfortably in such an alien context. Couperin's suites are less sequences of formal dances than pictorial miniatures that are conceived with the special effects department of the concert harpsichord, and the particular digital articulation the instrument demands, very much in mind. Hewitt's peerless technique and sharp intellect and wit ensured that the case she made would be a highly enjoyable experience in the making, and so it was, with every ornament and roulade finely turned within an appropriately reined-in dynamic range. The whole sequence was delightful, and, above all, great fun, which is saying something, given that the eight component pieces are all in the same key. It was sophisticated entertainment, but I was not left thinking that I must now urgently acquire every note of keyboard music that Couperin ever wrote, nor that the piano is his preferred instrument.

Extractions: Online Music Review La Folia Home] [Archives by Contributor] [Archives by Date] ... Page] Goldberg Variations Maurice Richter [July 2000. Originally appeared in La Folia Goldberg Variations quodlibet and more. The aria is a stately, dignified sarabande chaconne base in sarabande rhythm and consist strictly of ten sets of two variations followed by one in canon, with the very final canon replaced by a quodlibet . The nine canons, one at every chord interval, are arranged in order of ascending intervals to move toward a climax. The first (Variation 3) is a canon at the unison, the upper voices beginning on the same note, one bar apart. The next canon (Variation 6) is a canon at the second, and so on until Variation 27, which is a canon at the ninth. This large-scale formal arrangement is utterly without precedent. The work is full of remarkable coloristic devices and keyboard complexity. It is, most of all, a work of surpassing beauty. When the initial aria returns at the end, one feels, inevitably, that an entire world has been traversed. The Goldberg Variations Well-Tempered Clavier Partitas and other works on the Hyperion label surpasses herself in this new recording of the Goldberg Variations In Variation 5, a brilliant
