Extractions: World-renowned pianist, Martin Jones, will perform at BYU this week and will teach a Master Class in the Madsen Recital Hall. A recording artist on Nimbus Records, the master pianist has released 15 albums including the works of Mendelssohn, Brahms, Debussy, Grainger, and Szymanowski (which earned him Best Instrumental Recording of 1996 by the Spanish magazine "CD Compact"). Jones became one of Great Britain's highly regarded pianists when he received the Dame Myra Hess Award in 1968. "He's a world-class pianist," Keyboard professor at BYU, Irene Peery-Fox said. "A piano major could glean reputable interpretations from listening to his CDs." Keyboard Professor Scott Holden concurred and commented on Jones's affinity for recording sets of five and six CDs in a series. "I'm really amazed at his gargantuan recording projects," Holden said. "I really appreciate that he goes out of his way to find quality fringe repertoire."

Extractions: e-mail: peter-alexander@uiowa.edu Release: Nov. 30, 2001 Violist Rutledge Will Perform With Pianist Nosikova Dec. 12 IOWA CITY, Iowa Violist Christine Rutledge will play works originally written for cello and violin, as well as music composed for viola, on a University of Iowa School of Music faculty recital with pianist Ksenia Nosikova at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12 in Clapp Recital Hall on the UI campus. Rutledge will open the program with a solo performance of the Suite No1 in G major by J.S. Bach, originally written for cello. With Nosikova, she will play the Sonata No. 1 in C minor by York Bowen, and the Cesar Franck Sonata in A major, originally written for violin and piano. "This program is an interesting blend of original compositions for viola and transcriptions," Rutledge said. "The Bach Suites are often played on viola, since the transcription only requires that the suites be played one octave higher than the original cello version. "The Franck Sonata is played about as often on other instruments as it is on the violin, its original instrumentation. It is most often played on cello or flute, but violists consider it a major part of their repertoire, since there is not a wealth of literature for our instrument from this particular period. The transcription that I will be playing keeps the viola in the original key of A Major and also keeps most of the original range of the violin, rather than the standard method of taking most passages down the octave."

Extractions: The Mature Performer Recently I was skimming through Stewart Gordons book, Etudes for Piano Teachers, which just came out in paperback, and my attention was drawn to several sentences in the chapter Feux Follets where he discusses performing necessities, beginning with charisma: Particularly interesting are those artists whose charismatic index has soared with maturity, often with even middle or late years. These artists have often sustained a career over the years, on a less spectacular basis, on qualities other than the instant appeal of this type. They suddenly find their index rising rapidly as they begin to project such qualities as maturity, authority, and the simple fact of having successfully met lifes problems square on and emerging beautifully with strength, wisdom, and compassion. Having just read a new online biography of Dame Myra Hess I though of how this quality was wonderfully demonstrated in her life, who began her finest hour along with England, when she was in her fifties during the Second World War. Her leadership in organizing and participating in the concerts in London throughout the war, despite the bombings, will always be remembered as one of the grandest achievements in the life of any concert pianist, man or woman.

International Piano Archives At Maryland, UM Libraries obituaries of famous musicians, articles about famous pianists and conductors It was dame myra hess that suggested Hungerford study with Friedberg and she was http://www.lib.umd.edu/PAL/IPAM/IPAMhungerford.html
Extractions: Performing Arts Library International Piano Archives at Maryland The Collection The Australian pianist Bruce Hungerford was born in Korumburra, Victoria, November 24, 1922. He received his initial education in Melbourne, and later studied piano with Ignaz Friedman in Sydney in 1944. During the same year, Hungerford insisted on playing for conductor Eugene Ormandy, while Ormandy was on a tour in Melbourne. Ormandy eventually arranged for Hungerford to go to America in 1945 and study with Ernest Hutcheson at the Juilliard School of Music in New York. After two years Hungerford felt that he needed to move on and again sought Ormandy's advice. He suggested going to see Olga Samaroff, who offered to take Hungerford on as a student in Philadelphia. In October of 1947, Hungerford moved to Philadelphia and began working with Samaroff, but continued to look for a mentor. Hungerford was deeply disappointed with his lessons with Samaroff and approached Dame Myra Hess early in 1948 for advice. He received coaching and lessons from Hess during each of her visits to the United States and maintained a close personal relationship with her until her death in 1965. It was Hess who suggested that Hungerford study with Carl Friedberg, and she recommended Hungerford as a student. This began a long and fruitful relationship that lasted until Friedberg's death. Hungerford studied intermittently with Friedberg for about eighteen months and was then selected in the Fall of 1950 as the recipient of the first annual Carl Friedberg Alumni Association Scholarship, providing him with tuition for 25 lessons with Friedberg. At the first scholarship lesson Friedberg "talked for quite a while first and said that he had given me this scholarship as he is convinced I have the goods. I am no longer a student but a master, and I am to converse with him now with that understanding."
