St. Thomas have been in town this month recording Hey, Harmony, the working title of their third album, produced by Nashville's indie rock recordist of choice, Mark Nevers. On the record, percussionist Jeremy Barnes (formerly of Neutral Milk Hotel) and bassist Matt Swanson and pianist Tony Crow (both of Lambchop) achieve a jazz-like interplay with Hansen and his longtime collaborators, guitarist Espen Mellingen and banjo player Bosse Litzheim. Hansen's warbling voice charts a melodic statement upon which the other instrumental voices in his folk orchestra comment. He also enlists Dave Cloud to sing backup on a new tune called "Ride" and an off-the-cuff cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Who'll Stop the Rain?" Giant Sand's Howe Gelb was in town recently to contribute piano parts to the record.

Born in Massachusetts, he began teaching himself piano at age four. He received a Bachelor of Music degree from the New England Conservatory and a Master's from the University of Michigan. His principal teachers were Theodore Lettvin and Thomas LaRatta. Mr. Hansen performed an all-Liszt recital in the Netherlands on an 1866 Steinway which Liszt himself often used for recitals. He has recorded three programs for the Grand Piano television show which appears on cable systems in over two hundred cities and towns. Among his many performances with orchestra in the Bay Area are appearances with the Redwood Symphony, the Peninsula Symphony and the Merced Symphony. Over the years, they worked side-by-side in the dance halls of Louisiana, at Preservation Hall, and on the concert stages of the world. I recall being mesmerized by many magical moments at Preservation Hall in New Orleans listening to Kid Thomas's Algiers Stompers. There was never a demonstration of showy technique, just a sincere approach to the music he loved. The frail little trumpet player blew flaming notes into his battered tin derby that could be heard reverberating down St. Peter Street toward the Mississippi levee. Nelson always stood tall and handsome near the hall's carriage way entrance, carefully aiming his trombone slide between the crowded patrons. His droll expression was betrayed by the glint in his eyeand by the generous gray eyebrows that elevated provocatively when he gazed at an attractive lady. He had an uncanny ability to perfectly embellish every tune with his familiar musical aphorisms. We heard them often, but they never seemed redundant.
