Dr. Karen Walwyn first began her research on those 20 th century composers who are citizens of the United States of America with African heritage, when she became increasingly aware of the absence of the compositions of these Americans in the standard classical solo piano and chamber repertoire. Despite the significant number of important piano works by the composers, their compositions have rarely been programmed or studied in academic and non-academic arenas. Institutions of higher and secondary education concentrate mostly on the idioms of Jazz, soul, and Gospel. The contributions of the American composer of African descent to classical music is rarely addressed, and as a result, their music remains virtually unknown. Given to composers A composer is a person who writes music. The term refers particularly to someone who writes music in some type of musical notation, thus allowing others to perform the music. This distinguishes the composer from a musician who improvises. However, a person may be called a composer without creating music in documentary form, since not all musical genres rely on written notation. In this context, the composer is the originator of the music, and usually its first performer. Later performers then repeat the musical composition they have heard. Page above shows Mamie Smith. Click here to visit (or return to) Tim Gracyk's main page listing all articles. Above is a page from a mid-1898 catalog issued by the Kansas City Talking Machine Company. May C. Hyers was the first African-American female to make recordings. Her records were issued as brown wax cylinders, but none are known to have survived. She covered a variety of genres, from sentimental favorites such as "Ben Bolt" to hits of the day, including "Pumpkin Colored Coon" (KCTM cylinder #203). The above image of Hyers was made in the months that record companies began to take notice of a new American musical form, namely ragtime. The words "rag" and "ragtime" were added to record titles and record catalogs in the summer of 1898. I will discuss some African Americans who made early recordings and then early ragtime recordings. A few books claim that blacks never recorded before Mamie Smith cut the historic "Crazy Blues" for Okeh in August, 1920, but I can identify a handful who recorded in the 1890s and can think of about 25 black artists who recorded prior to 1920. Their names should be better known.
