Glenn Gould - An Appreciation and the future. However most people are familiar with gould the pianistheard on CDs and over the radio. There are special features http://www.thump.org/gould.php3
Extractions: Gould made his first commercial recording for Columbia in June 1955, the Goldberg Variations. It's perhaps no accident of history that a recording of an unfamiliar masterwork of Bach's by a relatively unknown, young Canadian pianist should have become the best selling classical LP of 1956. Gould by his very nature was never content with the orthodox; at his own insistence it had to be the Goldberg variations he recorded, not the more familiar French suites or Partitas. The legend began in a small church in New York where this recording was made; and the result was history in the making: the beginning of a series of records, without parallel in the classical world. Technology, Gould argued would overtake the traditional function of the concert hall: "In an unguarded moment some months ago I predicted that public concerts as we know it today would no longer exist a century hence, that its function would have been entirely taken over by an electronic media". From an early age Gould had experimented with recording by strapping microphones to the soundboard of his beloved Chickering piano. By his mid teens he was in the studios of CBC, the national radio station. He felt secure in the "womb-like" comfort of the studio: he was in control. The process of making a record was mastered by Gould early on. Towards the end of his life he would end up as a co-producer of his LP's besides making TV programmes and producing revolutionary radio programmes.

Extractions: Ours is a culture of celebrity. Duh. Sure, it's easy enough to shun, ignore, and rise above, but celebrity culture is infectious. It informs more than our awareness of the supermodel and the rock star, the politician and the pundit. Increasingly, we look at history with the same starstruck eyes. At age 31, Glenn Gould, one of the 20th century's greatest pianists, retired from the concert stage at the height of his career. He spent the rest of his musical career in the recording studio. He is best known for his debut recording, The Goldberg Variations by Bach. From the age of 23 until his death he recorded over 80 records, wrote articles and produced radio and television programs. He was an early champion of electronic media. He died of a stroke just days after his 50th birthday. He had beautiful hair as a young man. He wore ridiculous amounts of outerwear. He talked incessantly on the telephone. Starstruck eyes are unable to focus exclusively on deeds or output. Starstruck eyes gaze upon the details of the private aspects of public personae: their vulnerabilities, their eccentricities, their hair. Rendering the human superlatives typical, our voyeurism allows us to substantiate our humanity and to understand ourselves. Or something.

FUSION Anomaly. Glenn Gould These relationships were of critical importance to glenn gould, a masterpianist, composer, and great thinker of the twentieth century. http://fusionanomaly.net/glenngould.html
Extractions: Art relies on relationships. Great artists redefine, test, and manipulate relationships; their work emphasizes the connections and interactions between artist, work, site, audience, and technology. These relationships were of critical importance to Glenn Gould, a master pianist, composer, and great thinker of the twentieth century. His theories attacked the traditional values and expectations of music performance. His views continue to shape music culture and his ideas about music and technology were ahead of their time. His views are easily translated to a visual or digital arts context, while retaining much of their inherent perceptiveness and significance. His insight to relationships in art is critically important for all artists, especially digital artists. Glenn Gould: Gentle Genius Not in Concert Similar sentiments have been seen in the visual arts movement. The Russian constructionist artists also attacked the institutional art world and its "bourgeois" galleries. It is interesting to note that they attacked the same type if institutionalism and hierarchical social structure as Gould, but for contrasting reasons. Gould believed art and music to be a spiritual transcendence, it was a to be enjoyed outside of the materialistic world. Constructionist thought that the work was part of the world, and should have a purposeful use. Although their reasons were different, their conclusions were the same, and both theories incorporated the idea that art is a not about a single experience or work, but it is a way of

Also a great deal ($45 US). Steve Clark said: THIS VERSION IS VERY RELAXING AND SOOTHING. I don't know if this is the greatest recording ever done. What is astounding is the almost lunar abstractness with which Gould carves both fugas and preludes (although we know he didn't like much these kinds of composition). The reading of the canadian pianist is completely different from any other, assuming as a reference Fisher or Gieseking models. As an example, I would suggest the Prelude n.1 in C major BWV 846 and the Prelude n.5 BWV 850. These should be compared with the post-modern reading of Gieseking. I think Gould's Bach is the truest.
