Extractions: The pianist Glenn Gould (1932-1982) profoundly affected the way people hear, perceive and appreciate music in one of the most unique and fascinating careers in the modern history of classical music. For most of his mature career, Gould did not perform live, reaching his audience instead through a remarkable legacy of recordings and broadcasts now heard exclusively on Sony Classical. On the evening of January 11, 1955, Gould made his debut in New York "Debutown," as he called it and the next day signed a recording contract with Columbia Masterworks (CBS), which would become Sony Classical in 1986. Gould's first recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations took place at the CBS studios in June of 1955. The record won instant acclaim, became a bestseller, and launched the pianist's career as a fully mature international artist. Gould went on to make over sixty recordings for the label. Glenn Gould was born in Toronto on September 25, 1932, into a musical family: Edvard Grieg was a first cousin of his mother's grandfather, his father was an amateur violinist, and his mother played piano and organ. Gould's mother was his only teacher until he was ten. When he was three years old, it became evident that he possessed exceptional musical aptitude, including absolute pitch and even the ability to read staff notation. At five he began to compose, and he played his own little compositions for family and friends. At the age of six, Gould was taken to his first live musical performance, which was Josef Hofmann's last appearance in Toronto. It created a lasting and important impression upon the boy.

Extractions: Gould, Glenn Gould, Glenn, , Canadian pianist and composer. A prodigy, he began study at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto at 12. He was piano soloist with the Toronto Symphony at 14, and by the time he was 19 he was making concert tours in Canada, soon becoming known for idiosyncratic performance behavior. A great pianist, Gould was particularly noted for his interpretations of Bach and the romantics. As a composer, Gould was influenced by the postromantic music of the late 19th cent. His first published composition, a string quartet, had its premiere on television in 1956. During the 1960s Gould reduced his concert appearances to a minimum, preferring thereafter to concentrate on recording. See biographies by O. Friedrich (1989) and P. F. Ostwald (1997).

Extractions: From Some Portraits of the Artist as a Young Man , by Jock Caroll. The Ecstasy of Glenn Gould by Denis Dutton Now, as fate would have it, it falls to us to be nostalgic about the artistry of Glenn Gould, a phenomenon so compelling, so unlike anything else in music in our time, that it is impossible to imagine that he will be forgotten. In fact, I would hazard that if there is any twentieth-century performing musician who is still listened to five hundred years from now, it will be Glenn Gould. His recorded legacy is as close as I can conceive to being a permanent contribution to the history of musical art as any body of performance produced since the invention of the phonograph. inimitable and significantly unique Goldberg Variations Rhapsodies , Opus 79, are a case in point: those astonishing performances are unmistakably and indelibly the work of Glenn Gould, but never could I have guessed how he would interpret these pieces. Gould is in this respect so very unlike any of a dozen fine and famous virtuosos I could name. With the others I am certain I could, with fair probability, predict how their recordings of the Opus 79 Rhapsodies would sound.

Extractions: var cm_role = "live" var cm_host = "tripod.lycos.com" var cm_taxid = "/memberembedded" On November 14, 1955, Canadian concert pianist Glenn Gould performed in Sherbrooke. It was relatively early in his career, and the first time he had appeared in the city. He had not yet achieved his world-wide fame. Sherbrooke did not have a proper concert hall then; the auditorium of the St. Charles Seminary was used for such occasions. It was really like a university convocation hall long and narrow with a flat, wooden floor and a plain wooden stage. I recall that the acoustics of the place were quite good. I was assigned to review the concert for the Record. Here is what appeared in the paper the next day: By HUGH DOHERTY Glenn Gould, hunched on an ordinary chair over the keyboard of his grand piano, drew murmurs of comment from the first Sherbrooke Symphony Concert audience of the season at St. Charles Auditorium last night. The brilliant 23-year-old Toronto-born pianist presented a fantastic figure. Unkempt, sandy hair tossing wildly, he jerked rhythmically with the music of the orchestra. His long, thin arms dangled limply at his sides, almost touching the stage floor. When he launched into the opening bars of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4, he closed his eyes, tilted his head, and swayed low over the keys.

Extractions: Welcome to the Glenn Gould: A Perspective web page which I hope will be of interest to admirers of Glenn Gould's work. I suppose I am more or less an ordinary GG fan. Back around 1990 I borrowed a copy of the 1982 Goldberg Variations and since that time have listened to and enjoyed many of his recordings. I have also accumulated a nice collection of old Gould phonograph albums, one CD, Geoffrey Payzant's and Friedrich's book, a guide to the 1988 National Library GG exhibition, and a 1954 newspaper review. Another little treasure of mine are two musical scores, unmarked with no marginalia unfortunately, which are stamped "From the collection of Glenn Gould " that I purchased at a Friends of the National Library booksale. Less tangible but a gift of greater value was my renewed interest in classial music that Gould's albums inspired in me. Learning about Gould's life has also provided me with a fun diversion from raising my three children. Readers of this page are invited to send additional information and Glenn Gould anecdotes with which I might improve some of these articles. Send suggestions to mcdavids@pipsc.ca.

At the age of six Gould was taken to his first live musical performance which was Josef Hofmann's last appearance in Toronto. It created a lasting and important impression upon the boy. Robert Fulford, a distinguished Canadian author, met Gould when they were both nine and the two families were next-door neighbours. He wrote: "Even as a child Glenn was isolated because he was working like hell to be a great man. He had a tremendous feeling and loving affection for music. . . It was an utter, complete feeling. He knew who he was and where he was going." At the age of ten, Gould began lessons at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. Alberto Guerrero was his piano teacher; he studied organ with Frederick C. Silvester and theory with Leo Smith. Gould competed in 1944, at the age of 12, in the annual Kiwanis Music Festival and won the piano trophy. It was to be the only competition Gould would enter, for he later came to be strongly opposed to the idea of young musicians competing with each other and indeed to competition of any sort. In 1945 he passed the associateship examination as a solo performer at the Royal Conservatory, signifying a professional level of attainment. In 1946, at the age of 14, he passed the music theory examinations and was awarded a diploma with highest honors. Gould continued piano lessons with Alberto Guerrero until 1952.

WNYC - Music - The Fishko Files The supremely gifted and wildly eccentric pianist glenn gould died 20 years agothis October 4. To mark the occasion, this special edition of the Fishko Files http://www.wnyc.org/music/articles/5525
Extractions: The supremely gifted and wildly eccentric pianist Glenn Gould died 20 years ago this October 4. To mark the occasion, this special edition of the Fishko Files, "20 years After Glenn Gould," examines Bach as it is played on the modern piano, especially as it has or has not been influenced by Gould's style. Distinguished pianists Murray Perahia, Vladimir Feltsman, Angela Hewitt, Edward Aldwell, Maria Tipo and Sergei Schepkin are among the participants. The program traces the rise and fall and rise of Bach on the piano, from the years of Wanda Landowska and Rosalyn Tureck, through the Gould years to the present. Ample excerpts of performances by the pianists, as well as by Gould himself, will illustrate the commentary. Glenn Gould's arresting version of the Bach Goldberg Variations, first released in the mid-1950's, brought worldwide attention to both the pianist and the composition. More recordings and performances of Bach followed, in a style so distinctive as to have all but eclipsed other Bach players of his generation. Gould famously chose the recording studio over the concert stage early in his career, declaring, "the concert is dead." Known for his peculiar work habits (most notably his obsession with temperature in the studios) and a contrarian's approach to music in general (he dismissed many of Beethoven's greatest works while becoming fascinated by Petula Clark) Gould was one of the rare classical musicians to cross over into popular consciousness. But before the world knew about the oddities of his behavior, they knew about his Bach playing. It is his performance of the music of Bach and its effect that will be examined in 20 Years after Glenn Gould.

Most biopics shape the enigmatic events of life into the requirements of fiction, so that most lives seem the same, and only the professions and the time periods change. Francois Girard's "Thirty Two Short Films about Glenn Gould" brilliantly breaks with tradition and gives us a movie that actually inspires us to think about what it was like to be this man. Glenn Gould (1932-1982), born in Toronto, could play and read music before he was four years old. Taught only by his mother until he was 10, he was soon giving concerts in Canada and the United States, where Leonard Bernstein was one of his admirers. He became one of the great concert pianists of his time, and then, on April 10, 1964, without advance notice, he gave his last concert and refused to perform in public ever again. That was not the end of his career but the beginning of an extraordinary second career, in which he channeled all of his efforts into making recordings. His choice of the recording studio over the concert stage was explained in different ways at different times; he didn't like the idea of a performer upstaging the music, he would say, or he could not abide the idea that some people in the audience had better seats than others.
