Extractions: FREE PRESS MUSIC WRITER Polish-Hungarian pianist Piotr Anderszewski has won the $300,000 Gilmore Artist Award for 2002, one of the most lucrative honors in classical music, administered by the Kalamazoo-based Gilmore Keyboard Festival. RELATED CONTENT Gilmore Artist Award Anderszewski (On-der-shev-ski), who made his American orchestral debut with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra at the Meadow Brook Music Festival in July 2000, will receive $50,000 in cash and $250,000 for any career-related projects, such as purchasing a new piano, commissioning new music or a recording project. Anderszewski, 33, will make his debut as a Gilmore Artist at the 2002 Keyboard Festival, which opens Saturday and continues through May 11. The Gilmore also has selected Jonathan Biss, 21, and Kirill Gerstein, 22, to receive Young Artist Awards. Each will get $15,500 over the next two years to further their careers and education. Created in 1989, the Gilmore Prize is unique in the classical music world in that there is no formal competition. Instead, a committee travels the world, secretly evaluating pianists who are unaware that they have been nominated. The prize is named for the late Irving S. Gilmore, a Kalamazoo businessman, philanthropist and keyboard enthusiast.
Olli Mustonen, Playing By Numbers His first piano teacher was ralf gothoni. At present, Olli Mustonen has alongterm recording agreement with Ondine as a pianist and conductor. http://virtual.finland.fi/finfo/english/topical/muston03.html
Extractions: Olli Mustonen has merged the preludes and fugues of Bach and Shostakovich into a two-part programme. The first part was recorded in the order of keys used by Bach, i.e. chromatically ascending. The second part, now released by Ondine, features 24 preludes and fugues selected from both composers, organized according to the circle of fifths. Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) completed the 24 preludes and fugues of Book I of Das Wohltemperierte Klavier in 1722. Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975) wrote his 24 preludes and fugues, Op. 87, in 1950-51. Bach's collection is organized by key in chromatically ascending order, whereas Shostakovich - like Chopin in his preludes - follows the circle of fifths. The preludes and fugues of both Bach and Shostakovich are steeped in numerical symbolism. Olli Mustonen perceived that this mathematical logic extended to the structural link between the two collections, a reciprocal symmetry. It is possible to perform all 24 pieces by both composers together without ever having to repeat a key. "These two spirals of keys complement each other wonderfully," Mustonen said of his discovery.

Its 1998 move into Nordstrom Recital Hall was not an easy transition. The venue, which is part of Benaroya Hall, was new and glamorous, but its acoustics were not kind to strings in general, violins in particular.

MUSIC REVIEW NORTHWEST CHAMBER ORCHESTRA Where: Nordstrom Recital Hall The Finnish musician brought his great understanding of music to everything he touched. His knowledge is not his only calling card. He has ebullience, a kind of impetuous personality, an ability to communicate with music and musicians. He is serious, but his seriousness does not translate as dull and gray. His music-making was alive with energy and insight Saturday, which made this orchestra play in ways it rarely does. For once, the violins did not seem harsh and strident in the dry acoustics of Nordstrom. Details were omnipresent and balance was judicious.

COMING UP NORTHWEST CHAMBER ORCHESTRA WHEN: Tonight at 8 and Sunday afternoon at 2:30 WHERE: Nordstrom Recital Hall at Benaroya Hall TICKETS: $32, with student/senior discounts; 206-343-0445 In terms of the economy, their arrival in Seattle was not propitious. Like just about everyone else, the chamber orchestra, well-versed in financial problems over its 30-year-plus history, has experienced problems with its pocketbook. However, various angels have made substantive contributions to the orchestra, and it remains without a deficit and is expecting to end this fiscal year in the black. Anticipating better times next season, the orchestra is increasing its operating budget from $600,000 this season to $800,000.
