Extractions: Saturday, October 25, 2003 Former bakery reopens as club By PAUL LaPANN Bandleader Doug Hess is hoping larger crowds turn out in November and December for the Big Band Brunch on the second Sunday of each month at the Dils Center. Hess, 76, and his 17-piece band are playing from noon to 3 p.m., a half-hour later start than normal. Among those playing in Hess' band are Buddy Lee, Parkersburg High School band director Earl Corrothers, former PHS band director Rocky Wiseman and his wife, Sheila, Roger Hawk and Bill Ferrebee. Hess began his musical brunches in 1984 at the Holiday Inn and moved them to the Dils Center seven years ago. Bob Brockwell of 2314 Plum St. has retired after 47 years in the aggregates business, most recently as administrative manager at Martin Marietta of Parkersburg. Bob and his wife, Pat, have purchased a house in a gated retirement community in Port Charlotte, Fla., and plan to move next month. Their daughter Beth Nice, a 1985 graduate of PHS, and her husband, Curtis, moved to Port Charlotte from Parkersburg about a year ago. For Sammy Burdette's sake, I hope a large crowd turns out and bids a lot of money at tonight's 22nd annual SW Resources' benefit auction at the Parkersburg Holiday Inn. Burdette has spent 35 years at SW Resources, working hard to improve the lives of physically and mentally challenged people. Burdette pushes on despite recently undergoing experimental heart treatments following seven-way heart bypass surgery in 1997. The auction begins at 5 p.m. with more than 500 items up for grabs.

The Strad London informed in 1997: Wladimir Kossjanenko set the place alight with his Bach Chaconne and wrote in 2002: Mr. Kossjanenko has developed into the very model of a modern Russian violist. Russian born Austrian violist Wladimir Kossjanenko began his musical education at the age of five. After his graduation from the special music school in Alma-Ata he studied with Professor Vladimir Stopitchev at the Conservatory in St. Petersburg from 1986 to 1991. Whilst studying he appeared as a principal violist and assistant conductor of the "Leningrad Soloists". In 1991, following an invitation from the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra directed by Claudio Abbado, he came to Vienna. He continued his studies at the Vienna University for Music and Performing Arts with Professor Hans Peter Ochsenhofer and Professor Thomas Kakuska, and later with Professor Michael Kugel at the Royal Conservatory in Ghent, Belgium.
