Extractions: Savannah Morning News Before Saturday night, few folks in town knew much about pianist Yuliya Gorenman. After her appearance with the Savannah Symphony Orchestra, she has a host of new fans. The Russian-born Gorenman performed Rachmaninoff's "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini'' with the SSO, led by Philip Greenberg. Since its premiere in 1934, the piece, if not among the world's most profound works, has proved enduringly popular with audiences. Bouncing off a theme found in Paganini's Caprice No. 24, Rachmaninoff's variations range from the delicate to the sinister, the thunderous to the frankly sentimental. You hear in the music everything from the dark hues of the Dies irae in the Gregorian Mass of the Dead-a melody the composer particularly admired-to suggestions of Broadway schmaltz. The piece, exploring such a broad range of pianistic and orchestral textures, asks a lot of the soloist. Gorenman patently has the talent to meet, even transcend the work's challenges. Her rendition of the "Rhapsody,'' in its more electric moments, was bold and impassioned; her touch in its more delicate passages was sensitive and lyrical. Her playing in the final variations particularly built an irresistible momentum that turned the familiar music into something fresh and exciting. An extroverted and warmly expressive performer, Gorenman won the audience's clamorous approval; after a deafening ovation, she played a couple of well-received encores.

RCSO : About Us Cities Symphony Orchestra has featured many outstanding soloists, artists of trulyinternational reputation such as pianist yuliya gorenman, prizewinner at the http://www.rcso.us/about.php
Extractions: A Brief History The River Cities Symphony Orchestra was founded in May, 1997, to continue the tradition of orchestral performance in the region encompassing Parkersburg, West Virginia and Marietta, Ohio, which is locally referred to as the Mid Ohio Valley. That tradition had been embodied in the Marietta Chamber Orchestra, led by its music director, William Duer. After the dissolution of the Marietta Chamber Orchestra, musicians and members of the board of the Marietta Chamber Orchestra decided to create a new orchestra to continue that tradition. From inception, the mission of the River Cities Symphony Orchestra has been to provide the highest level of orchestral music attainable, featuring professional musicians from the Mid-Ohio Valley, West Virginia and Southeastern Ohio. The Orchestra was incorporated on August 14, 1997, and gave its first performance, with Gayle Walker of Marietta College as guest conductor, at the Blennerhassett School Auditorium in Parkersburg on November 23, 1997. River Cities Symphony, now beginning its seventh season with Robert Turizziani as music director, has made 30 concert appearances in Parkersburg, WV and Marietta, OH. Today, the orchestra performs four concerts a year and features 45 t0 55 outstanding musicians for each of these concerts. The River Cities Symphony Orchestra spent its first three concert seasons seeking a permanent music director. During this period of seeking its identity it also developed into a more professional level musical organization. Many outstanding guest conductors led the orchestra in those years. Kimo Furumoto, Music Director of the Huntington Symphony Orchestra and Orchestral Director at Ohio University School of Music was the principal guest conductor. Mr. Furumoto appeared with the orchestra in six orchestral programs. Kimo Furumoto, Robert Turizziani and other fine guest conductors provided valuable guidance in our search to become a quality regional orchestra.
