Extractions: Pittsburgh , PA How to Select the Right Private Piano Teacher By Felicia Wishner The successful teacher usually is a positive person, concerned with others and has chosen teaching as a career. Teaching is a personal art and it must be studied. A big misconception is that if the teacher is a great musician, he/she will also be a great teacher. This is not always true. Make sure your teacher has a proven method and a track record of success teaching the style and level of play of the student. Interview the teacher, speak with some of his/her students, and review the teaching materials. A piano teacher should present himself/herself as a professional, and you should see musical progress within a few months. Chemistry between the student and teacher is very important, so keep an eye out for a connection. Don't ever settle. Get the right teacher, especially if you are a beginner, because the beginning teacher can "make or break" a young pianist. Contents VOICE/SINGING Teacher

Extractions: By Triveni Sheshadri It began in the 1980s when the university operated out of a San Marcos storefront as a satellite campus of San Diego State University "The plays and exhibits were a way to get the word out to the public about our campus," coordinator Bonnie Biggs said. "We had to move furniture to make room for art exhibits and concerts." The series has evolved along with the campus and has become an extension of classroom learning. "It's linked directly to curriculum," said Biggs, who brainstorms with faculty to come up with ideas for the series. A highlight of the spring series that began this month is a performance by students of the Korean National University of Art Dance Company based in Seoul. The 42-member troupe will perform five pieces, ranging from works rooted in ancient traditions to modern dance. The Salpuri dance has its origins in shamanic rituals of preventing sudden death, devastating illness and other calamities. The scarf replaces the sword used by shamans. The Buchae-Chum is the traditional ensemble fan dance. The modern dance is titled "What's Going On?" The two ballets are "Paquita," the story of a child raised by gypsies who reunites with her family, and "La Esmeralda," based on Victor Hugo's novel.

Extractions: This fascinating documentary explores Judaism in Cuba. It captures how Judaism has been preserved on this small, tropical island, so close yet so far from the United States. Abraham and Eugenia reveals the poignant story of two people who have maintained their beliefs throughout the last 35 difficult post-revolutionary years. It reveals how faith and commitment can overcome seemingly impossible odds. By the director of Trees Cry for Rain: A Sephardic Journey (TJFF 1992). This is a story of betrayal, arrest and triumph of love over adversity. It is based on the memoirs of Ola Wat, wife of Aleksander Wat, Jewish poet and activist. In 1939, the family flees Nazi-occupied Warsaw for the presumed safety of the Communist East. Arrests of the Polish elite begin immediately and when Aleksander is taken, Ola and their son are exiled to Kazakhstan. Against all odds, Ola never gives up her dream of being reunited with her husband. This is an exceptional film that has won the highest film awards in Poland. 1993 Nominee, Best Foreign Language Film, Academy Awards. San Francisco and Toronto International Film Festivals.
