Extractions: Misha Simonyan, Violin Uncomplicated virtuosity best describes performances by the Kirov Orchestra under the leadership of Valery Gergiev, one of the most charismatic conductors on the podium today. This magnificent orchestra was founded in the 18th century and has a distinguished history as one of the oldest musical institutions in Russia. Its 1998 performance for Music Worcester was greeted with hoots of approval from a heated-up audience whose standing ovations demanded, and were granted, three encores. Maestro Gergiev is Artistic and General Director of the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia, where he oversees the Kirov Orchestra, Ballet and Opera. He is internationally recognized as one of the most outstanding musical figures of his generation, and is Principal Conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic and Principal Guest Conductor of the Metropolitan Opera. At 17 years of age, the Russian violinist Mikhail (Misha) Simonyan is already recognized as a leading talent of his generation. Leonard Slatkin heard Misha in the spring of 2001 and immediately invited him to perform under his direction with the National Symphony for the 30th Anniversary of the Kennedy Center in April 2001. Following that performance, Maestro Slatkin reinvited him to play with the National Symphony under his direction at Wolf Trap in the summer of 2002. Misha has also performed with the Russian National Orchestra led by Mikhail Pletnev and Vladimir Spivakov in Russia, and with the Moscow Virtuosi led by Vladimir Spivakov at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.

Extractions: Keyboard music of the romantic period draws on a wide vocabulary of rhetorical figures, which are usually derived from accompaniments to thematic material. These figures aim to characterize or establish moods and subjects. Schubert, in particular, has bequeathed an enormous vocabulary of rhetorical figures. For example, the spinning motive, used to superb effect in "Gretchen am Spinnrade", quickly became a much-used gesture in the piano literature of the period. Godowsky's response to Schubert's vocabulary is typical. He never allows rhetorical figures to remain intact, in his transcriptions of twelve of Schubert's Songs. As an example, the water motive in Die Forelle is dissected and manipulated to the point where it loses much of its original character. But Godowsky's methods vary considerably from song to song. His variations on
