Extractions: [69'34"] full-price by Johann D'Souza It is a known fact that Beethoven's Second Piano Concerto was actually his first and that his First was his second. The reason being that he had made no less than four major changes to the former, delaying its trip to the publishers. As a result of this it was assigned as No.2. These concertos were very dear to Beethoven and about five years lapsed before they were actually published. While Beethoven did perform them in public, these majestic works could not be played by any other than himself. When he did send his second piano concerto to the printers, he confessed: "I do not pass it off as one of my best because I am keeping the better ones for myself until I myself make a journey, yet you need not be ashamed to print it". The first two piano concertos are so characteristically Mozartian that an amateur could easily believe them to be a couple of Mozart's late piano concertos. The opening bars of Beethoven's First Concerto sounds like Mozart's last C major Concerto K.503 (No.25, 1786); however it is not long before Beethoven's harmonic expansions bring to it its own distinct features. Beethoven was already striking it out as a prolific pianist - mind you, by the time of his death he had composed 32 Sonatas for the piano, 12 Sonatas for violin and piano, all topped off with the five piano concertos.

Pictures Whatever piano Grigory Sokolov performs on in tomorrow night's CBSO concert, listeners can rest assured it will have passed muster to his searching scrutiny. His examinations of instruments in concert halls over various continents have passed into legend, the Russian pianist is remarkable matter-of-fact about his concerns. "I want to be sure that everything is all right there," he tells me, "and of course I need the help of a tuner - because, you know there doesn't exist a good piano without a good tuner." Sokolov seems happy enough with conditions at Symphony Hall, making a return there soon after last October's concert with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra under Walter Weller. Birmingham is a recent addition to Sokolov's itinerary, though he did play with William Boughton's English Symphony Orchestra. It is politics and history which have kept Sokolov a well-kept secret from this side of the Iron Curtain until its collapse at the end of the 1980's. They are all live concert performances, which is all to the good if you are not easily bothered by variable sound quality and audience contributions, by cough as well as applause. The recordings date from1965 (Schubert) to1984 (Scriabin). Those two are amongst the best for sound, and the Schubert is astonishing for its phrasing and articulation, one of the most involving and satisfying readings of a set of pieces which can, under less sensitive hands, have its longeurs. The Scriabin too can be heavy and sound repetitive, especially in the working out of its initial theme, but this is one of the most convincing interpretations I remember, and I found it gripping. Gilel's Mozart is a little dry and pedantic, his Beethoven sound - the 32 Variations especially exciting. The Schumann

That kind of Social Realism dominated official art in Russia, starting in the 1930's. But artists found ways to pursue their own styles in secret. They organized private, apartment viewings of their work, and then finally, near the end of the Cold War, were able to bring their paintings out in the open. Pamela Renner talked to the painters Vitaly Komar and Grisha Bruskin about their transformation from subversives to international stars. Twenty years ago in Leningrad, the Soviets developed the Lomo camera as a way to provide Western-style consumer electronics to comrades throughout the Eastern bloc. The Lomo became the standard issue snapshot camera for a generation. A couple of decades later, Western photographers have discovered the versatility of the humble Lomo. Produced by John Stanik.

Extractions: ARIS, 14 November 1997 - Pianist Sviatoslav Richter died in Moscow on 1 August after suffering a heart attack at the age of 82. The Ukrainian-born pianist of German descent was one of the greatest musicians of the Soviet era, and for many, one of the 20th century's greatest pianists. Richter came to the attention of western publics in the 1960s, preceded by Emil Gilels's accounts of his contemporary's legendary feats at the keyboard. Although Richter was a late developer (not beginning serious tuition until 1937 at the age of 22 with the eminent pedagogue Heinrich Neuhaus, who also taught Gilels) he still went on to become one of the most unusual artists the classical music world has ever known. In fact, Richter had that rarest of musical gifts: he kept you listening even after he had stopped playing. In Europe, Richter was positively lionized, notably in Germany and France where he had a second home and spent considerable time. Liturgical devotion to the text, an uncanny mixture of artistic genius, and iconoclastic behavior made Richter the leading draw in Paris. After all, the idea that a pianist will pack up his instrument in a van and set off for who knows where, stop because he likes the look of a wheat field in Touraine, then notifying a couple of locals and giving a legendary performance in a barn appeals to the strong individualistic streak in every Frenchman. Of such escapades, the Festival of La Grange de Meslay was born.
