Kempff still performed at the age of 80 with his friend Leonard Bernstein in New York City. The friendship between the two has developed after the Second World War. Bernstein praised the German: "He is one of the most interesting personalities I ever met in my life." After 1945 Kempff lived in Ammerland near Munich. His adopted home became the Italian town Positano near Naples, where he suffered a stroke. Kempff was a pianist with an unmistakable, unique touch. His interpretations of piano works of the classic and romantic styles were always stamped with a highly personal style. Even at the start of his career, he was a pedagogue; he delayed starting his performing career in earnest until World War One. Throughout much of his life, he was an educator as well as a musician, and he was more than a mere dabbler in conducting too. (In fact, this set preserves his excellent, intense Mozart Symphony #40 recorded in 1953 with the Municipal Orchestra of Strasbourg.) Alfred Brendel is included among his pupils. At his best, Fischer played with a beautifully caressing tone married to a gentle but masculine strength. His interpretations, Romantic in spirit, didn't always remain faithful to the composers' literal intentions, at least as we understand them today, but they consistently uncovered poetry that made him one with the composers' creative spirits. As a result, we don't hear Fischer's playing as particularly "old fashioned." Like many pianists from the first part of the 20 th century, Fischer's first priority was communication and expression, and if he took chances and hit a few wrong notes in the process, then that was just an occupational hazard. Today, we have come to expect technical perfection at all times, and musicianship unfortunately has become more sterile as a result. Particularly in these live performances and broadcast recordings, you'll hear mistakes that never would be allowed in today's studio recordings. For the most part, though, you won't hear pianism as strong and magical as Fischer's.

I have always detested piano rolls - including earlier transfers to CD of these performances - because of their mechanical inflexibility, but these are in a different class altogether, for two reasons. Its centerpiece is his legendary 1938 Casimir Hall recital, which includes Beethoven's "Waldstein" sonata, Schumann's Kreisleriana , four Chopin pieces, and several encores. The recital given in April 1938 in the little 350-seat hall of the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia found Hofmann at the pinnacle of his career and facing a personal crisis, his imminent dismissal as Director of the Institute. The result was a group of impassioned performances in the grand manner, totally committed and totally assured, titanic in their power, astonishing in their virtuosity, and wonderfully pure in their lyrical flow. His heavy rubato and explosive outbursts sound very mannered to turn-of-the-century ears and any pianist who tried to play this way today would be severely criticized (I have done so myself), but this was the style in Hofmann's time and quite possibly Beethoven's own style as well.
