Extractions: No other German pianist in the 20th century had a similar international career like Walter Gieseking. He made several concert tours around the world, he made hundreds of radio appearances, he had an extensive recording career, he authored several books - some are still in print today - ,and he was revered by audiences and critics alike. Gieseking was born in France of German parentage. Athough his father was a medical doctor ,he never practised medicine. Instead he more or less successfully earned his money as a freelance entomologist. Since catching butterflies and preparating them involved a lot of travelling through sparsely populated regions, little Walter never went to school. This did not prevent him from teaching himself to read and write. Walter autodidactically learned everything he could put his hand on, even mathematics. Usually a piano was also availabe, so Gieseking taught himself to play and within a reasonably short time he was able to play the complete Bach and many works of other composers. He got acquainted with the music of Richard Wagner and played whole operas from score. Like his father he was an ardent entomologist. Two butterfly subspecies are named after Gieseking: Giesekingiana and Walteri. Gieseking accumulated an enormous repertoire while studying with Leimer . It included many works of Chopin, Liszt and Beethoven. He performed the complete cycle of Beethoven sonatas in six concerts in 1915/1916.

Craig Smith's Emmanuel Music the Boston group most dedicated to Bach waited for its 25th anniversary to do the greatest of all choral works, Bach's St. Matthew Passion . Smith's flexible and heartfelt conducting, the amazing orchestral ensemble (with notable solo playing by concertmaster Danielle Madden and oboist Peggy Pearson), the magnificent chorus, and especially thrilling performances by young Stephen Salters, Frank Kelley, and the glowing Sanford Sylvan as Jesus made it all worth the wait. Stephen Wadsworth's bourgeois-tization of Handel's heroic Xerxes (Boston Lyric Opera) may not have been the most profound realization of the score, but Lorraine Hunt's singing and Craig Smith's conducting certainly were, and countertenor David Daniels made another outstanding impression. In production values, this handsome borrowed production also rose above the checkered record of our only continuing opera company.

Extractions: Eighteen consecutive editions for a music festival is no mean feat, especially if we go back further in time to the musical tradition that had been firmly rooted in Sorrento. During the 1970s Sorrento had already played host to the "Incontri Musica1i Internazionali" out of which today's Summer Music Festival emerged in 1985. The success of this festival is even more remarkable if we think of the many performances that were hurriedly conceived in the early 1980s, only to be then lost in the troubled waters of the 1990s. The "Sorrento Summer Music Festival", organised by the Sorrento-Sant' Agnello Tourism Board, is sponsored by the Campania Region Department for Tourism and the Performing Arts. It also enjoys the patronage of the Council of Ministers and the Sorrento municipal authorities. With Maurizio Pietrantonio at the helm, as musician, artistic director, the brains and its driving force, the Festival has never lost sight of its course.

The brilliant pianist Esteban Sanchez plays works by the Spanish composer Isaac Albeniz, including his Sonata No. 5 and Recuerdos de viaje (Memories of a journey). The latter is a wonderfully evocative series of postcards in sound. These impressions of landscapes and people predate his more famous Iberia, and the dramatic music with its sweeping rhythms and melodies is explored to splendid effect on this new recording. PAT THOMAS - NUR EMANEM 4046. London-born pianist and composer Pat Thomas plays four completely improvised pieces in this digital concert recording in the chapel at Cheltenham and Gloucester College of Higher Education. The works are called Nur (an Arabic word meaning light), Mubarak (Arabic for a very blessed person), Variation on Two Themes and The Analogy (reflecting the performers debt to the music of jazz genius Thelonius Monk). Russian Sonatas by Scriabin [Nos 1, 2, 4], Rachmaninov [Nos 1, 2, the latter in the 1931 revision], and Prokofiev [No 8]) on APR 5552 . The late Schubert B flat and Chopin Third on APR 5553 . Wonderfully evocative early recordings from the 1960s, entitled, Vol. I, 'The Contemplative Liszt') on APR 5581 . And Bach's Partitas Nos. 1 and 4 plus the pianist's own transcription of the unaccompanied G minor Violin Sonata on APR 5558 On the latter, Fiorentino displays his characteristically gorgeous tonal palette, plus a certain deliberateness familiar at times from other of his recorded performances - for example, the Schubert B flat Sonata [a measured reading]. But he is never staid, lethargic, or lacking in esprit. The lively movements bounce along merrily (the Courante of the First Partita), in spite of a post-romantic yet never merely objective outlook the playing exceptionally clean, well articulated ... and, oh, so musical and warm. Fiorentino's own transcription of the G minor Sonata is effectively filled in harmonically, without ever approaching a Godowsky-like extravagance, while his Fourth Partita is extraordinarily eloquent: suprisingly, he even adds a few discreet embellishments to the repeats of the Allemande and Sarabande. This, like the Liszt anthology, is listed as a Vol I.

Extractions: IGOR KIPNIS The career of Naples-born Sergio Fiorentino (1927-98) commenced actively just before the 1950s, after he had been singled out as a prize winner in competitions in Monza [1947, the jury headed by Michelangeli], Geneva [1947, joint second], Naples [1948 Concorso Rossomandi, first] and Genoa [1948, first]. Following several European and American tours (his American debut was in1953), he suffered spinal damage when his plane had to make a forced landing in South America, although he eventually recovered well enough to continue his concert career. In the mid-fifties, a time when he appeared again in public, notably in England, he also began to record for a variety of companies, including Saga (discs which I later regretted not having obtained). The routine of touring, however, began to pall, and for the next decades Fiorentino spent his time teaching at [his alma mater ] the Conservatorio San Pietro a Majella in Naples, where he held the post of professor and from which he retired in 1993. Gradually he began performing again, especially in Germany, from which several of the radio broadcasts issued by APR emanate. Having heard those initial 1993 recordings ( APR 7036 , 2 CDs) of Bach-Busoni, Beethoven's Op 110, Chopin's Second Sonata, Scriabin's Fourth, the Schumann Fantasy, and a host of encore lollipops such as the Strauss-Godowsky Fledermaus Igor Kipnis , November 5th 1999

The artist obviously enjoys performing this type of literature and it shows in his tempos and subtly of his phrasing and embellishments.
