DPO debuts Beethoven's final symphony at Schuster by Burt Saidel Beethoven's final symphony, his ninth, is a musical icon. The music sets Friedrich Schiller's poem An die Freude, "Ode to Joy," to the most glorious musical expression. The artistic effect of this great work is an unique combination of majestic music, a wedding of full orchestra, chorus and soloists and a poetic expression of the loftiest ideals. The entire world recognizes and reveres this great work. In Japan, for example, its performance is the New Year's Eve tradition throughout the country. When technicians created the CD format, the capacity of the disk was designed to hold the Ninth Symphony. It is a test for orchestra, chorus and soloists. The music uses every part of the orchestra to the fullest. The choral parts are, likewise, tests of vocal range and endurance.

Together they mounted an innovative touring partnership that would enable them to perform in out-of-the-way communities throughout Canada where the stars of the classical music world rarely venture. In 1994, with the aid of Jane Colwell of Colwell Arts Management, and with start-up funds from the J.W. McConnell Family Foundation, the ambitious ten-year project known as Piano Six was launched. When the project began, our hope was that Piano Six tours would benefit rural classical music lovers, young and old, in a number of ways. By sending world renowned pianists into small or isolated communities, we hoped struggling classical music presenters would find it easier to attract and build audiences for their concert series. We even dared hope that communities that did not have an ongoing classical concert series might be inspired to start one, using annual visits by Piano Six

Since the series' inception, nearly sixty pianists have graced its roster, and many have been so warmly received that Dayton audiences have requested their return on three or four separate occasions. The has provided the Midwestern debut for many of these artists, and a large number have gone on to achieve recognition throughout the world. To date, the series has offered a podium to pianists such as Frank Braley, Steven DeGroote, Kemal Gekic, Caio Pagano, Sergei Schepkin, Juana Zayas, and many others of international distinction. In addition, the has offered the area premieres for contemporary works by composers such as Messiaen, Prokofieff, Sessions, Shostakovitch, and Stravinsky. The guiding philosophy of the has been to celebrate the artistry of the piano by presenting performers of rare distinction, many of whom have traveled uniquely individualistic paths of accomplishment. Happily, that philosophy has been warmly embraced over the years by its audience, which has proven to be one of the most knowledgable and appreciative in America.

Extractions: Paderewski, the most famous pianist of his time, was also a serious composer who wrote a grand opera and a patriotic symphony. His Piano Concerto is an entertaining work in late-romantic style. It's not exactly a work of genius, but the charismatic, poetic, and virtuosic playing of Janina Fialkowska is enough to put it over the top. Fialkowska, a Canadian-born pianist, has recorded for RCA and CBC, but has never developed a major career. Her playing on this disc shows that she deserves one. The Polish Fantasy is a lot of fun, especially as Fialkowska plays it. The orchestra and conductor give her excellent support, and they also do well with the little-known concert overture. This disc may not be what we consider necessary music, but it provides enough enjoyment to justify its modest price. Leslie Gerber

During the ten-year life of this project, each artist has pledged to take time out from his or her busy international career to tour solo for ten days each year for Piano Six , performing in a different region each year. In order to give as many communities as possible a chance to participate in these extraordinary tours, the artists offer their services to the project for a fraction of their recital fees. Says Piano Six founder Janina Fialkowska, "we're especially anxious to reach out to those communities who think - quite wrongly -that they're too small or too far away to attract a major concert artist". One of the project's special features is that artists are made available to host communities for not only a public recital but also some form of educational out-reach event, such as a school mini-concert, a masterclass for area piano students or a teachers' workshop. Fialkowska admits thatthetoursinvolve "unbelievable amounts of work - some of us go out for ten days and give twenty-two performances". As mentally and physically challenging as these tours can be, however, she and her colleagues feel strongly that their efforts are repaid by the enjoyment and satisfaction that they derive from their personal encounters with music lovers all across the country. Indeed, for the members of this extraordinary sextet
