Extractions: Named 1989 Musician of the Year by the "Boston Globe", pianist Stephen Drury has concertized throughout the United States and the world. He made a very successful New York debut at Carnegie Recital Hall in 1984 as the winner of the Concert Artists Guild International Competition and has since given solo performances at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, New York's Symphony Space and many other widely varied venues. A champion of twentieth-century music, Stephen Drury's performances of music ranging from the piano sonatas of Charles Ives to works by John Cage and the music of John Zorn have received the highest critical acclaim. In 1988-89 he organized a year-long festival of the music of John Cage and, at the composer's request, played the premiere of Cage's "101" with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in April, 1989. In 1991 he commissioned new works for solo piano from John Cage and John Zorn with funding provided by Meet The Composer and performed the works in Paris and at the Walker Center in Minneapolis. In March 1995, he performed the world premiere of John Zorn's concerto "Piano Requia" with the Cologne Radio Orchestra and conductor Dennis Russell Davies. Mr. Drury was selected by the United States Information Agency for its Artistic Ambassador Program, which led to a 1986 European recital tour. A second tour in the autumn of 1988 took him to Pakistan, Hong Kong and Japan. He gave the first piano recitals ever heard in Julianehaab, Greenland, and Quetta, Pakistan. It has no Evangelist delivering Gospel texts but is a quasi-dramatic representation of the discovery of the empty tomb by four of Jesus's followers (a convenient vocal quartet). The short episodes of the Magnificat , in the D major version sung here, use constantly changing vocal forces and orchestration. Both pieces are full of imaginative scene painting and gorgeous arias and choruses. The performances on this disc are superb in every respect. McCreesh accepts our current understanding of Bach's performance practice by using the soloists as the chorus, one to a part, with his 22-member Gabrieli Players and a Baroque German church organ providing splendid support, all recorded in perfectly balanced sound. The singers are experienced Baroque specialists and they sing beautifully, with accurate intonation, clear diction, and idiomatic and expressive phrasing. McCreesh's direction, as always, is crisp and authoritative, and his period-instrument orchestral group provides rich, warm accompaniments. There are other good recordings of this glorious music, for instance from Herreweghe (Harmonia Mundi), but this one stands head and shoulders above the rest and should not be missed.

Extractions: Gardenin', fishin', bikin', librarianin'. Hollenbeck Saw John Hollenbeck on the advice of Kramer last night. He (Hollenbeck, not Kramer) was in town doing a guest composer gig here at the U. The university jazz band was ok doing it's own stuff, but then zoweewhen they played his music it was like a different band came into the room. Kudos to the kids. Looking at these guys' biographies, I see they're all heavily involve with klezmer / slavic, and at least one of them has worked with John Zorn and Uri Caine. Why is it that this is such a small damn world!?! Are there so few people playing good jazz today that they circle around each other in Brooklyn like a flock of turkey vultures
