1-0 Reviews John Zorn pianist stephen drury and violinist Jennifer Choi duet to some very intense strains, informed not so much by chamber classical as by clinical schizophrenia. http://www.geocities.com/1-0/REVIEWS/ZornJohn.html
Extractions: Notes from Zorn and others about his September, 1993 residency at the KF, NYC Soundtrack to Japanese cartoon series originally released in 1988, but only in Japan. Zorn uses a rapid, jump-cut style similar to his Naked City music for this soundtrack. The tracks are short, and very evocative of the action. Performers include Bill Frisell, Marc Ribot, Ikue Mori, Wayne Horvitz, Bobby Previte, and Cyro Baptista. One of Zorn's heroes is Carl Stalling, who wrote the music for the classic Bugs Bunny cartoons of the 40s and 50s. On this album, he demonstrates his mastery of the form, and updates the sound a little with guitars and plenty of odd sound effects. Coaster Trip : A rollercoaster ride is portrayed very effectively by Zorn's music. Fun, exciting, scary, tense, crazy...just like a coaster trip.

When Ivor Biggun's first gripping single ' The W*nker's Song ' spurted out upon an innocent nation, it was deservedly banned by every radio station in the world. Extractions: Another LA musical snapshot from behind the wheel... Driving down Sunset Boulevard while listening to Michael Jon Fink's Five Pieces for Piano . Outside the car is a visual world of garish movie billboards, hectic people, the deep red of the Whisky A Go Go, and the spring purple blooms of the jacaranda tree (via Virginia Postrel). Inside, distant from all that stimulation, the piano music is sparse, quiet, and yet sharp; Cage's In a Landscape but more intense. The five pieces are Passing, Mode, Fragment, Echo, and Epitaph. The CD is Fink's I Hear It in the Rain , another from Cold Blue. Amazon samples Richard di Santo's review These pieces move slowly and quietly; they whisper to you in the night, a single solitary voice that echoes from within the silence. And from the Cold Blue Music website ...display Finkâs command of crystalline forms that are Debussyian in beauty (and occasionally in gesture) yet hold a distinctly contemporary artistic distance from their musical materials. These fragile and primarily extremely quiet pieces are performed with great aplomb by Bryan Pezzone. Posted on June 03, 2004 in

Rzewski The People United Will Never Be Defeated At From-left-field.com interpretations by such luminaries as stephen drury and Ursula easy to compare Hamelinand drury, it s musically MarcAndre Hamelin is a pianist who ventures http://www.from-left-field.com/a/B00000IXWM/Rzewski-The-People-United-will-Never
Extractions: But comparing two versions of these 36 variations on the song's theme is fraught, given Rzewski's heavily improvisational performance instructions (e.g., to play variation 11 "like fragments of an absent melodyin strict time," variation 27 "Tenderly, and with a hopeful expression"). Hamelin takes the piece more strictly and in more clearly virtuosic terms than Drury, just as he's taken Scriabin and Medtner. He starts off stronger and paces himself differently, sometimes faster, sometimes slower, but always more deliberately. People is a work prone to radically different interpretations, and while it's easy to compare Hamelin and Drury, it's musically better to take each on its own. It's folksy, rootsy music that gets microtonal in fragments and deconstructs the melody so thoroughly that it'll be 36 times lovelier when you're done listening. The added bonus of Hamelin's version is the inclusion of the warm "Down by the Riverside" and "Winnsboro Cotton Mill Blues," both given the theme-restatement-improvisation processing treatment that marks Rzewski's unparalleled work in traditional folk musics.

David Tudor, piano; Ensemble Modern, Ingo Metzmacher, conductor; Stephen Drury, piano; Callithumpian Consort of the New England Conservatory, Charles Peltz, conductor. Mode Records, Mode 57, 1997. One compact disc. The Piano Concertos disc covers a wonderfully wide range of material: three different sound worlds of Cage's output, all in excellent performances. The fact that the repertoire focuses on Cage's grievously under-recorded medium-to-large ensemble compositions is an added pleasure. The disc contains many surprises, beginning with its title (who thinks of Cage as a composer of three piano concertos?) and a moving on to the realization of its content. The disc opens with the beautiful sounds of Concerto for Prepared Piano and Chamber Orchestra . A well-rehearsed orchestra plays in tune and with good tone, taking loving care with details. Even the blend with the solo prepared piano, so problematic with this concerto featuring a muted soloist with a full symphony orchestra, is carried off with finesse. The exotic compounds of instrumental sound in the orchestra complement with logic the metal and wood agregates of the stopped notes in the piano. When the soloist's prepared notes combine with orchestral sounds, the results are simply magical.
