BSQ Reviews The Borromeo String Quartet and stephen drury, the pianist, conveyed the score svibrancy as well as the humor in its multiple fakeout endings. http://www.borromeoquartet.org/reviews/rev_03_12_04.html
Extractions: March 12, 2004 Raceful lyricism and dissonance would seem to be polar opposites and impossible to reconcile, yet Mark-Anthony Turnage, an English composer born in 1960, has built his art on fusing those qualities. Some of his works - including a few performed on an installment of the Making Music series at Weill Recital Hall on March 4 - tilt one way or the other. But where his music is at its most magical, he is able to continuously renegotiate this amalgam through the length of a piece, letting a listener ride the waves of musical discourse without worrying, from one phrase to the next, which way the balance is tilting. Perhaps one reason Mr. Turnage accomplishes this with such deftness is that he has other balancing acts going on as well. A fascination with jazz improvisation, for example, jostles for the spotlight with the rigors of fully-scored contemporary music. Mr. Turnage's latest recording, ``Scorched'' (on the Deutsche Grammophon label), is a collaboration with the great jazz guitarist John Scofield, and although none of the music on that disc was performed on Thursday, the program did include a pair of works performed by the jazz saxophonist Joe Lovano, as well as Mr. Lovano's improvisation on themes from one Mr. Turnage's ``Two Memorials'' (1995-2002). That improvisation, a study in muscular, chromatic swirls in which Mr. Lovano's tenor saxophone resounded through the hall, established the common ground between Mr. Lovano and Mr. Turnage, whose chromaticism in ``Two Memorials'' moves farther afield. Mr. Lovano, joined by Stephen Gosling, the pianist, also played ``Sarabande'' (1985), a quirky work in which the substance often sounded like 1950's jazz gone interestingly awry. But both players were also required to periodically ring a bell of the kind that used to be found in shops and at motel desks, giving the deadpan performance a hint of Monty Python zaniness.

From fields as diverse as computer music ( Subotnick Wessel ), jazz ( Zorn ), and the visual arts ( Brereton ), artists will present Messiaen's world and personality through their own work. The new opera production will be evoked by the performance of short excerpt from Saint Francois d'Assise These cross-disciplinary bridges will be highlighted by practical and didactic means. Kurt Brereton will evoke Messiaen's insatiable quest for birdsongs as well as synesthesia and the essential part musical colors would play in Messiaen's composition, through his paintings and installations. In informal discussions, computer music pioneer Morton Subotnick and eclectic composer John Zorn will share their interest in Messiaen's work. Scientist and improvising composer David Wessel will give a hands-on tutorial on the Ondes Martenot, a rare instrument that is key to Messiaen's

Founded by pianist and conductor Stephen Drury sometime in the1990's, we are an ensemble producing concerts of contemporary music at the highest standard. The Callithumpian Consort was created in the belief that new music should be an exciting adventure shared by performers and listeners alike, and that brand new masterpieces of our day are beautiful, sensuous, challenging, delightful, provocative, and a unique joy. Our audiences bring fresh ears to sounds never heard before; they bring their experiences from rock stadiums, jazz clubs, and internet electronica to the concert hall. They hunger for the new. The Consort is flexible in size and makeup, in some cases performing as a full chamber orchestra. Its members pursue parallel solo and orchestral careers as well. Each musician is a soloist, enabling the group to tackle unusual repertoire in non-standard ensembles, or to take part in experimental projects.
John Zorn: Angelus Novus chamber symphony For Your Eyes Only and Carny, a virtuosic solo piece that receivesan impassioned and breathtaking performance by pianist stephen drury. http://www.tzadik.com/CDSections/ComposerSeries/angelus.html
Extractions: 9. pardes John Zorn has shown us many sides of his eclectic musical vision (some may think too many), but here is a side of Zorn's work that has pretty much remained hidden - his compositions for classical chamber ensembles. This CD marks the first in a series documenting these pieces, commissioned by some of the world's leading ensembles and appearing on CD for the first time. The works here span over twenty years, and include Christabel, a student piece written in 1972 inspired by the romantic mystic poetry of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, the wind octet Angelus Novus composed for the world-renown Netherland's Wind Ensemble and dedicated to the Jewish cultural theorist Walter Benjamin, the dynamic chamber symphony For Your Eyes Only and Carny, a virtuosic solo piece that receives an impassioned and breathtaking performance by pianist Stephen Drury. The Callithumpian Consort of the New England Conservatory (conducted by Stephen Drury) perform this challenging music with startling clarity and intensity on this CD that will surprise and delight Zorn fans and detractors alike.
