Extractions: Buy one from zShops for: Artist: Tracks: Average review score: Wow ! ! ! Franco and the OK Jazz are an institution in Central African popular dance music. Between the 1960's and 1990's they had hit after hit (reportedly they recorded over 100 albums!). They performed in concerts and clubs all over the world. I was fortunate to see them in 1990, in the Vis-a-Vis club in the Matonge nightclub district in Kinshasa (in Zaire/Congo, home to the OK Jazz); to keep it short: that night is one of the most memorable musical experiences of my life (though by that time lead singer Franco had died and the band broke up a few years later). Many OK Jazz (sometimes called the TPOK Jazz) albums are available on CD, and every "world music" enthusiast should have at least a half dozen. What makes this CD special is its early vintage. These tracks were recorded in the late 1950's and are an extremely interesting foreshadowing of what was to come. It's fascinating to hear African pop music develop before your ears, as the OK Jazz mix African and Latin American rythms and styles. (All the more interesting because Latin American music is itself partly derived from African sources. Latin American records, brough by Europeans and Americans, were very popular in Africa in the middle decades of the 20th century.)

Extractions: OK, I admit it! I picked up this CD because of the great-looking Ralph Lauren-esque cover art. Lara is gorgeous and not your typical classical pianist. But then I listened to the recording and discovered that she's REALLY not your typical classical pianist! A feisty, swinging musician with a mind of her own, she brings a brand new sound to these terrific American classics. I can't recommend this enough.

Extractions: he Living Composers Project Rzewski Frederic (b. April 13, 1938, Westfield, Massachusetts). American composer of mostly orchestral, chamber, vocal, and piano works that have been successfully performed and recorded across the world; he is also active as a pianist. Prof. Rzewski studied music at first with Charles Mackey of Springfield, and subsequently with Walter Piston, Roger Sessions and Milton Babbitt at Harvard and Princeton. He went to Italy in 1960, where he studied with Luigi Dallapiccola and met the flautist Severino Gazzelloni, with whom he performed in a number of concerts, thus beginning a career as a performer of new piano music. His early friendship with Christian Wolff and David Behrman, and (through Wolff) his acquaintance with John Cage and David Tudor, strongly influenced his development in both composition and performance. In Rome in the mid-1960s, together with Alvin Curran and Richard Teitelbaum , he founded the MEV (Musica Elettronica Viva) group, which quickly became known for its pioneering work in improvisation and live electronics. Bringing together both classical and jazz avant-garde composers (including Anthony Braxton and Steve Lacy), MEV developed an aesthetic of music as a spontaneous collective process, an aesthetic which was shared with other experimental ensembles of the same period (especially the Living Theatre and the Scratch Orchestra). Since 1977, he has been Professor of Composition at the Conservatoire Royal de Musique in Liège. He has also taught at the Yale School of Music, the University of Cincinnati, the State University of New York at Buffalo, the California Institute of the Arts, and the University of California at San Diego. In addition, he has taught at Mills College, the Royal Conservatory of Den Haag, the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin, and the Hochschule für Musik in Karlsruhe.

Extractions: The UC Davis Department of Music last week officially announced the lineup for its 2002-03 season, including its inaugural events in the Robert and Margrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts. Announcing the 44th season were music chair Ross Bauer and UC Davis Symphony Orchestra conductor Kern Holoman. "Weve got a really great mix of home-grown talent and imported talent," Bauer said. "Im not sure everyone realizes how impressive our home-grown talent is." He noted upcoming performances including those showcasing the work of university bands director Jonathan Elkus, choral director Jeffrey Thomas, pianist Lara Downes, the Empyrean Ensemble, the Albert McNeil Jubilee Singers, San Francisco violist Geraldine Walther and the Fridegg Trio of Germany. In addition, special fanfares have been commissioned to, early in the season, honor music patrons Barbara Jackson and the Mondavis. Concertgoers can look forward to hearing "a new warmth, unparalleled resonance, and richness all around," said Holoman. "Its supposed to be the best acoustics anywhere, and so far theres every reason to imagine that will be so." "Acoustics mean so much to the success of a concert," Bauer added. "So this is an important moment for all of us. Weve wanted (a facility) like this for probably 50 years."
