Extractions: Click on each CD cover to go directly to the review *** QUICK AUDITIONS *** We start off with Guitars Galore! = Another thoughtful, unusual and exciting crossover album. The four guitarists come from different genres of music (Di Meola is one of the top jazz guitarists and Summers is a member of The Police), some use some nylon strings, some use steel and some of the them play electric guitars vs. Barrueco's classical acoustic guitar. Some of the 13 tracks originate with the three guest guitarists but others are by Copland, Nazareth, and Villa-Lobos (the last a delightful improvisation on an Etude by the Brazilian composer and titled "Wolfsville" - a backward translation of his name). The different styles mesh beautifully while retaining their individuality. What a kick to kick down the musical fences in this way! SOR: Five Short Pieces; Fantasie; Six Lessons; GIULIANI: Garyowen; 12 Waltzes; Blue Bells of Scotland - David Starobin, guitar - Bridge 9107: Virtuoso guitarist Starobin here presents on his own label a program of works from the two most famous names in guitar performance in the first part of the l9th century. Their efforts in both composition and performance laid the groundwork for the later flowering of the classical guitar under Segovia in the 20th century. Both classical and operatic music were influences on these works, as well as a need to please the tastes of the bourgeoisie with grand waltzes and variations on folk melodies such as the Blue Bells of Scotland. Starobin plays a guitar built in the style of an 1830s Viennese guitar. All the selections are deftly played and cleanly reproduced.

Jelly Review: Benny Golson A final, and all together different viewpoint of Golson s writing skills, is foundwith On Gossamer Wings, which is handled solely by pianist lara downes. http://www.jellyroll.com/2001/golson.html
Extractions: Tenor saxophonist Benny Golson has been writing and recording jazz music for four decades now, and his noteworthy new album only scratches the surface of "One Day" in a career that has seemed to last "Forever." Golson's horn work has always consistently produced beautifully warm tones, but the selling point of this latest release is Benny Golson, the composer. As with most players, a composer's instrumental work attracts the most attention to his or her skills, and this rule holds true for Golson. Over repeating piano chords, which blink on and off like an unattended left turn signal, "Killer Joe" swings with an unobtrusively hypnotic swagger. It's an oft covered underside-of-the-pillow cool tune, and rightfully so. Like the most of this album, it is performed by the Sextet, which is a modified version of Golson's late Fifties/early Sixties Jazztet and features Art Farmer on trumpet and Curtis Fuller on trombone. This performance is highlighted by Fuller's full-bodied and authoritative solo. Later, on "Blues Alley," Golson's Sextet pulls out all the stops and rocks hard (if that can even be said about a jazz tune) on this propulsive ensemble piece. But these examples represent only one side of Golson's compositional personality. The incomparable Shirley Horn sings two ballads here: the title cut and a post-breakup cry called "Sad To Say." Produced to the hilt with a full orchestra, these two songs are significant in that they showcase Golson, the lyricist.

Extractions: WHETHER COMPOSING OR PLAYING, BENNY GOLSON TURNS THE UNKNOWN INTO SWEET MUSIC The first question to decide in an account of Benny Golson is the proper sequence of his job title: Is he a tenor saxophonistcomposer or a composertenor saxophonist? An avuncular, erudite conversationalist, Golson's narrative deploys polysyllabic words in correct context. He continues to carry himself with the seemingly unflappable aplomb and no-nonsense professionalism that allowed him to flourish and keep focus through a half-century of music business encounters. He's seen chitlin' circuit juke joints, tobacco warehouses and inner-city lounges that defined "funky" before the word became a musical category; and moved comfortably in sophisticated nightclubs and posh concert halls in the capitals of the world. But even Golson's cool was challenged when Howard University, where he matriculated from 1947-'50, called a few years back to inform him that they were instituting a scholarship in his name. "This was unreal," Golson exclaimed during a late-December conversation in the living room of his well-appointed Upper West Side high-rise. "I almost cried. During my third year at Howard, I became a rebel, and took to doing my assignments the way I felt that I could. Why can't I have octaves? Why must the dominant always go to the tonic? Why can't it come from the leading tonic? I started asking things like that, and they looked at me like I was crazy.

GW: Dwayne Burno on bass and drummer Joe Farnsworth are featured as well. You also have bassist Ron Carter and pianist Mulgrew Miller and drummer Carl Allen, and Shirley Horn singing. You did the lyrics for "One Day, Forever." BG: Art used to play that particular tune. He played it beautifully, and Shirley does the same thing. GW: There's a tune that a lot of people associate with you, "Killer Joe." It was the first tune of yours that was ever recorded. BG: "Stablemates" was the second. GW: It all started back in Philadelphia, on Page Street. Mr. Coltrane lived on 12th Street. What was it like? You guys were teenagers together playing, weren't you? BG: We absolutely were. It was exciting. It was a time of aspiration and dreaming. We did a lot of dreaming in those days. We had our photographs [of the musicians we admired]. We'd see ourselves in those photographs, hoping. GW: Little did you know that you would be playing with a lot of those people whose photographs were up on the wall.
