Extractions: American Ballads: Press Release POSTCARDS RECORDS RELEASES PIANIST LARA DOWNES' AMERICAN BALLADS Postcards Records is pleased to announce the release of classical pianist Lara Downes' second release, American Ballads , the follow up to the critically acclaimed Invitation to the Dance . This time around, Lara takes a look at American composers that have been influenced by the aural landscape that surrounded them, namely popular song, jazz, and folk music. American Ballads features compositions by Samuel Barber, Aaron Copland, Charles Ives and others, but one of the highlights of the CD is the world premiere recording of jazz saxophonist/composer Benny Golson's On Gossamer Wings , which Lara will debut at Lincoln Center in March 2001. American Ballads comes on the heels of Lara's whirlwind schedule last year. Her debut recording was received with open arms in the classical community. With many concerts around the United States and Italy completed, some of Lara's shows in 2001 are at Lincoln Center in March, the EdgeWise contemporary music festival in May, which includes Philip Glass, Kronos and Steve Reich. Lara will also perform selections from American Ballads at museums around the country for the Smithsonian American Art Museum's touring exhibit "Scenes of American Life". Currently an artist in residence at the University of California at Davis, Lara's heavy performance schedule is augmented with a four-part series of concerts entitled "Perspectives".

Lara Downes News Release Postcards Records is pleased to announce the release of classical pianist lara downes debut CD, Invitation to the Dance, a collection of solo classical pieces http://www.view.com/downes-news.html
Extractions: NEWS RELEASE POSTCARDS RECORDS RELEASES LARA DOWNES' INVITATION TO THE DANCE Postcards Records is pleased to announce the release of classical pianist Lara Downes' debut CD, Invitation to the Dance , a collection of solo classical pieces by 19th and 20th century Masters such as Liszt, Weber, Ravel, Chopin and Barber. All the pieces on the CD relate to popular dances of their time; it is a fascinating recap of where we've been on the dance floor over the last 200 years. Invitation to the Dance is the first classical release on the Postcards label since the Arkadia Entertainment Group acquired it in 1999. Under the leadership of Arkadia founder Bob Karcy, the acclaimed electro-acoustic avant-garde jazz label expanded its horizons to include classical and world music. Lara.Downes is the first artist to premiere a recording and the first classical artist as well. "Not many people have what Lara has," says Karcy. "She's an incredible virtuoso, she's funny, sophisticated, intelligent and she looks great too. She could be the next big thing in the classical world." Lara Downes has been hailed as one of the most promising young pianist today, and her choice of repertoire runs from the traditional to the avant-garde. Her recent projects include a Copeland Centennial recital, a newly discovered piano concerto by Clara Schumann, and a four-part recital series entitled This American Century. "I have been intrigued by the interdependence between music and dance" Lara says, "Dance, after all, is music in motion, the physical embodiment of sound." It seems only natural then that she would want to take on a project that tied together the two things she loves most.

Extractions: Classical: Instrumental Violinist Nikolaj Znaider¹s second CD as an exclusive RCA Red Seal recording artist. Mr. Znaider calls the CD Bravo! Virtuoso and Romantic Encores for Violin More than merely a compilation of encore works that demand the utmost virtuosity from the violinist, this new CD Bravo! Virtuoso and Romantic Encores for Violin traces the historical legacy and the subtle cross-influences of legendary violinists of the past, many of whom wrote works for the violin. Several of these pieces refer to the style of other violin virtuosos while pushing the instrument to the extremes of technique. For example, Fritz Kreisler, in his Recitativo and Scherzo Caprice, pays homage to Eugène Ysaÿe, whose distinct style and influence can be heard in the orations and rich chordal outbursts. Mr. Znaider is accompanied by pianist Daniel Gortler. Israeli pianist Daniel Gortler started his piano studies with Naomi Hacohen. He graduated from the Rubin Music Academy in Tel-Aviv and later from the Musikhochschule in Hanover, where he studied with Professor Arie Vardi. In addition, he has taken classes with Christoph Eschenbach. Daniel Gortler has won many competitions, including first prizes in both the Viña del Mar International Competition in Chile (1987) and the Bremen International Piano Competition (1991), second prize at the Munich International Piano Competition, and, when he was only 19 years old, third prize at the Geneva International Piano Competition. He has also won the Gina Bachauer Award in Jerusalem (1989) and the Salon de Virtuosi annual award in New-York. Daniel Gortler is a faculty member of the Rubin Music Academy at Tel-Aviv University.
