BBC NEWS | Entertainment | Polanski Beats Brits At Cannes d Or, or Golden Palm for Best Film The pianist by Roman raoul Ruiz, director. by Hollywoodstars such as Leonardo di Caprio, Cameron diaz, Elizabeth Taylor and http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/2009403.stm
Extractions: Roman Polanski's The Pianist has won the prestigious Palme d'Or award at the Cannes Film Festival. The British had one winner, Paul Laverty for his screenplay in Ken Loach's film Sweet Sixteen, but lost out in the film and acting categories. The Pianist beat 21 other films vying for the Palme d'Or, including movies by Mike Leigh, Michael Winterbottom and Loach. Polanski took the top prize Polanski's film is about the Holocaust and stars Adrien Brody as a brilliant Polish pianist who escapes the Warsaw ghetto. It was interpreted as a very personal film by Polanski, 68, himself a Jew who survived the Krakow ghetto but lost his mother at a Nazi camp. "I am honored and touched to receive this prestigious prize for a film that represents Poland," Polanski told the closing ceremony in Cannes. The Grand Prix, which usually rewards originality and research, went to The Man Without a Past by Finnish director Aki Kaurismaki, which is about an amnesia victim in the slums of Helsinki.

Extractions: Cannes - 2002 "What are your favorite films shown in the Cannes Competition?" Nothing quite yanked the chain of my European critic friends at the 2002 Festival like my stars-and-stripes, xenophobic, post-Sept.11 answer: "The American movies rock!" It was true, Eurodudes. Our USA went three for three where it counted: up the red carpet at the Palais in the Official Competition. Alexander Payne (Citizen Ruth, Election) triumphed with his third straight clever, acerbic comedy, the Jack Nicholson-starring About Schmidt, and Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights, Magnolia) used Adam Sandler brilliantly in his loopy farce, Punch-Drunk Love. Michael Moore's Bowling for Columbine, the first documentary selected for Competition since Louis Malle's Le Monde du Silence in the 1950s, was, les mains-down, the most popular film among Cannes' first-nighters. The gown-and-tuxedo gathered rewarded Moore's agit-prop movie essay about the violence-soaked USA with a ten-minute standing ovation. Finally, Woody Allen left his beloved New York for an Opening Night screening (out of Competition) of Hollywood Ending, which had already played theatres back home to tepid reviews and terrible box office. The French weren't crazy about the movie either, but Allen tamed skeptics with his calculatedly diplomatic words at a press conference. "The French people have been so supportive of my films and so affectionate to me, that I thought I'd show some gesture of repricocity and gratitude," Allen explained of his unexpected live appearance on the Cote d'Azure. "When I made Hollywood Ending, I looked at it and thought that the Cannes audience would get a particular enjoyment out of it."

Extractions: Wide Open Spaces (Monument) Monument Records, a Nashville label that has been out of business for 10 years, is coming back to life under the power of Sony Nashville, and it's raising its flag on the Dixie Chicks' Wide Open Spaces . It's a perfect match, really; this Dallas-based trio is Wilson Phillips, only all three of the "chicks" here are gorgeous and the famous parent hiding his face in embarrassment is Lloyd Maines (father of lead singer Natalie Maines). As such, the music is bland, the lyrics recount predictable scripts that have been written into pop songs for as long as they've existed, and about the only way to tell this is supposed to be country as opposed to pop are the strings - and Papa Maines on steel guitar. It's true that, in its recycling, the kind of generic pop drivel of songs like "Once You've Loved Somebody" or "Loving Arms" will always remain vital, but it's also true that each carrier of this torch is but a paper container, as expendable as the next.

Extractions: photo: Jarko Aikens Marcel Worms is a Dutch pianist, classically trained but also with a strong interest in jazz. In 1996 year he asked nine well-known Dutch composers to write him a Blues. He was curious to know what the Blues, one of the roots of jazz music and still in important point of departure and point of reference for many jazzmusicians, meant for the contemporary composer either with a classical background or classically educated. He premiered these Blues in January 1997 in Amsterdam (as well as a Blues written for him by Michael Finnissy) in the BIMHUIS, Amsterdams foremost jazzstage. At the end of 1997 again 12 new Dutch and foreign Blues were ready and were premiered at the Icebreaker, Centre for Contemporary Music in Amsterdam. Since then many other premieres took place, which were mostly recorded by Dutch radio. Marcel Worms has laid contacts with composers in the countries where he will give or have allready given recitals recently. This has resulted in about 140 new compositions until now originating from over 35 different countries e.g. many European countries, Argentina, Brazil, China, Cuba, Malaysia, Russia, Singapore, South-Africa, South-America, the Ukraine and the USA. The repertory is still growing.

Extractions: New York City is undoubtedly the most famous modern city in the world and is the setting of countless films. We often see high-rise buildings, endure non-stop traffic and encounter diverse people. However, in Gangs of New York , we go beyond the structure, motions and individuals that define the resilient city and experience the extraordinary events that forged it. Indeed, America was born in the streets. Gangs of New York rises out of the conflicts between the Anglo-Saxon natives of William Cutting ( Daniel Day-Lewis ) and the Irish immigrants led by Priest Vallon, laying claim to the Five Points of New York. Vallon is killed by Cutting in the defining battle, but his son Amsterdam ( Leonardo DiCaprio ) returns years later to take revenge. The story is set within a city plagued by crime, ruled by corrupt politicians and dominated by bloody gang warfare amidst the anti-conscription riots of 1863. Jay Cock s story and screenplay focuses on Amsterdams quest for vengeance but does not neglect the historical aspects of this important period.

Extractions: Conrad Nagel (1897-1970) Conrad Nagel (sometimes spelled Nagle) was born in Keokuk, Iowa on March 16th, 1897 into a musical family. He began acting in theater by 1914, and in films by 1918. Suave and sophisticated, handsome Conrad became a popular star of many drawing-room and historical dramas and romantic comedies. His first film production on the West Coast was "The Fighting Chance", opposite Anna Q. Nilsson . He made an impression in popular silent films of the time, such as "What Every Woman Knows," (1921), "Fool's Paradise" (1921), and "Bella Donna" (1923), opposite Pola Negri . With the advent of sound Conrad's career continued full steam. The phrase heard around the studios in those days was: "Get Nagel. He can talk." Conrad continued making a presence in films until the 1950's, gradually doing more and more character roles as he aged. However, he inspired the animosity of Louis B. Mayer (never a good thing to do if you wanted to work) when he helped to establish the Screen Actors' Guild. Thereafter the quality of the parts given to him began to suffer, but Conrad kept working in films, on radio, on Broadway and later on television. Conrad was co-founder and past president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and one of the creators of the Oscars. He was married and divorced three times and had two children, a boy and a girl. A son-in-law of Nagel's was chief executive for the defense giant Northrop Corporation. Conrad Nagel died in New York City on February 24th, 1970; he was cremated, and his ashes given to his family.

Extractions: Apr 19, 2001, 9:30 AM PT It feels like Cannes can do it all over again. This year's Croisette-bound crop of directors is the Cannes International Film Festival equivalent of a rerun, as many of the filmmakers representing at the fest have been there before. Cannes favorites like Joel and Ethan Coen , (they won the coveted Palme d'Or in 1991 for Barton Fink ) and David Lynch (he won in 1990 with Wild at Heart ) will compete with their new films, festival organizers announced Thursday. The Coens, who won critical acclaim but returned home sans prize last year with O Brother, Where Art Thou? , will compete with their latest, The Man Who Wasn't There , starring Frances McDormand and Billy Bob Thornton Lynch will offer up his Mulholland Drive against 22 other films, including the Sean Penn-helmed The Pledge , starring Jack Nicholson, and Shrek , the computer-animated film directed by Andrew Adamson and Victoria Jenson and featuring the voices of Mike Myers Cameron Diaz and Eddie Murphy Another previous Palme pilot
