Bach

Extractions: In collaboration with the Dutch Chamber Music Society (KAN) CANADA ONLY Ellen Corver, piano; Peter Brunt, violin; Larissa Groeneveld, cello The Osiris Trio was founded at the end of the 1980s, at a time when the interest among young musicians in classical piano trios was on the wane. Pianist Ellen Corver, cellist Larissa Groeneveld and violinist Peter Brunt had each won their spurs in the diverse styles and genres of their discipline. After their debut in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, playing, amongst other pieces, Mendelssohn's second trio, the new piano trio had a fiery development and was awarded the recently-established Philip Morris Finest Selection Prize in 1992. An ever-increasing number of concerts enabled the musicians to broaden their repertoire and to equip themselves with a solid foundation. In 1997, the trio was once again awarded a well-endowed honour: the Annie Bosboom Award from the Kersjes van de Groenekanfonds. This award facilitated further developments in their international career. Since then, the Osiris Trio has toured four continents, represented the Dutch delegation in one of the first editions of the Rising Stars series (an exchange between the major concert halls in Germany, Austria, Great Britain, Sweden, the Netherlands and North America), has been invited to grace an official state visit of Queen Beatrix as well as to perform Her Majesty's prestigious birthday concert. Alongside dozens of concerts every year, the members of the Trio regularly give master classes and record CDs and on several occasions have played Beethoven's Triple Concert with orchestras in the Netherlands and in South Africa.

Peter Donohoe Piano Biography "Donohoe is a pianist in a class of his own, an interpreter with a quite extraordinary feeling for musical phrasing, a "sculptor" of the piano,..... his relentlessly clear representation of thematic conflicts brings the drama to life." Detlef Brandenburg (Schleswig Holstein 1993) Peter Donohoe was born in Manchester in 1953 and studied at the Royal Northern College with Derek Wyndham and then in Paris with Olivier Messiaen and Yvonne Loriod. Since his unprecedented success at the 1982 International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, he has developed a distinguished career in Europe, the USA, the Far East and Australasia. In recent seasons he has appeared with the five London orchestras, regional UK orchestras including the CBSO, RPO, SCO and RSNO; and across Europe with the Berlin Philharmonic and Symphony Orchestras, the Leipzig Gewandhaus, Dresden Philharmonic, Swedish Radio, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Orchestre Philharmonique de MonteCarlo, Czech Philharmonic and Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. Extractions: Classical Field Diversity is once again the buzzword in the lineup of classical nominees for the 44th Annual GRAMMY Awards, with indie labels continuing to grab an increasing share of the spotlight. In 11 performance categories, indie labels received 25 nominations to the majors' 30, and once again contemporary music and rare repertoire beat out the standards. Several outstanding contenders were nominated in two different categories, and, after a near shutout last year, American orchestras make a welcome return in four categories. The artists nominated for the Best Classical Album category are no strangers to longtime GRAMMY watchers. The nomination garnering the most buzz in the industry is conductor Sir Colin Davis's new recording of Berlioz's sprawling opera Les Troyens A London Symphony for Chandos, helmed by Brian Couzens.

Mozart was anything BUT simple with his 38th Symphony, several steps more advanced than anything in that genre he had composed before, but wildly appreciated by audiences in Prague when it was premiered. And we think you'll be quite wild about a jazzy Concerto for String Quartet and Winds by Erwin Schulhoff, a talented Czech composer whose life was cut short by Nazi repression but whose music soars again in the hands of the young Daedalus String Quartet. Extractions: WGUC's Gary Barton examines the must-have works of Erik Satie Erik Satie (1866-1925) played such an important part in the direction of French classical music that it is shocking that, for a time, no recordings of his music were available, and few people outside academia were aware of its existence. Neither were they aware of the influence he had on Debussy and Ravel in their formative years. He was born in Honfleur, Normandy (where the Seine meets the English Channel), to a French father, a ship's broker who later moved to Paris, and a Scottish mother, who died early. Satie's father remarried, and his new bride and her mother moved in. Erik preferred the company of his uncle, who pianist Frank Glazer refers to as a "solitary and strange creature with a bizarre, although original and fanciful turn of mind whose influence on the nephew was strong and permanent... Erik had music lessons with a local church organist who, no doubt, fed his pupil a large dose of Gregorian Chant; its rhythm (or lack of conventional rhythm) and its modal melody became the first and fundamental influence on Satie's musical outlook." Once in Paris, Satie struck out on his own as soon as possible, playing piano in cabarets on Montmartre where he was to meet Debussy and Ravel. You probably best know Satie's , either in their original piano version or in Debussy's orchestrations. The simple melodic lines of
