Extractions: By Daniel Mangin May 21, 1999 B ernardo Bertolucci describes "Besieged" as a "piece of chamber music for the cinema," the Italian director's way of acknowledging a sweep less operatic than that of previous works like "The Conformist," "Last Tango in Paris" and "The Last Emperor." Old habits die hard, though. "Besieged" unfolds on the surface as a duet between two dislocated souls, but Bertolucci can't resist working many of the psychological, sociopolitical and personal themes of his larger projects into this supposedly simpler composition produced for Italian television. The strategy at once expands on the film's source, a short story by James Lasdun, and diminishes it. At the film's outset an African woman named Shandurai, played by Thandie Newton, flees her unnamed country after its military arrests her husband. She lands in Rome, where she enrolls in medical school, supporting herself by tidying up after an eccentric English musician who becomes intensely infatuated with her. Mr. Kinsky (David Thewlis), as Shandurai always calls him, can't just come out and tell her he's mad about her. Via the dumbwaiter that connects their living quarters a townhouse he inherited from his aunt he shuttles cryptic gifts: a question mark on a blank sheet of music paper, an orchid, an heirloom ring.

And then liberal “Bowling For Columbine” director Michael Moore took the stage, and took on the President. Standing with the other nominated documentary filmmakers, Moore proclaimed, “We like non-fiction, and we live in fictitious times, with fictitious election results, a fictitious president, sending us to war for fictitious reasons. ... Shame on you, Mr. Bush!" Greeted by both applause and heckling, Moore personified the controversy of the evening, willing to say what others were likely thinking but too respectful to preach. What do I think about all this? Well, first, as a film critic, politics runs outside my expertise. But I do believe it was appropriate for the ceremony to go on. As best actress winner Nicole Kidman so wisely put it, "Why do you come to the Academy Awards when the world is in such turmoil? Because art is important." And it should be noted that several presenters used the spotlight to wish U.S. soldiers a safe and swift return from harm. It was a bizarre night in Hollywood, and one that may have gone unnoticed by many. Overnight ratings indicated it was the least-watched ceremony in history. But, for those who endured the evening, the winners and losers were clear.

His first teacher was Kathryn Gladden, a former pupil of Moriz Rosenthal (a student of Franz Liszt). Later he studied with Salavatore Spina in The Young Artist Program of the American Conservatory of Music on a full scholarship. He continued his education at Manhattan School of Music, studying piano with Arkady Aronov and Alexander Edelmann, of whom he was the last student. His musical development has been shaped by the influence of Dmitri Bashkirov, Gaby Casadesus, Richard Goode, Jerome Rose, Miyoko Nakaya Lotto and currently Nicolai Lomov who acts as his mentor.
