Music Associates Of America ~ MadAminA! Norman Carol as effectively as the legendary serge Koussevitzky friendly with a young pianist/composer by the name Nielsen, Paul Hindemith, Julius conus, and most recently Stanislaw http://www.musicassociatesofamerica.com/madamina/encounters/carol.html
Extractions: Norman Carol In the world's concert ritual, the musicans take their place on stage, the orchestra warms up and pretunes, the house lights dim, and the hushed and expectant audience awaits the entrance of the maestro. Before his appearance, however, another player in the drama makes his way onstage. He is the concertmaster whose role in an orchestra is so central that his presence is separately acknowledged. Among the world's great concertmasters, the name of Norman Carol looms large indeed. He has occupied the principal violinist's chair in the Philadelphia Orchestra for 20 years. When Koussevitzky invited the 19-year-old Carol to join the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Carol turned him down, still following the blueprint of well-intentioned parents and wishful-thinking teachers which demanded that he funnel his energies into a solo career. But when Koussevitzky called him a second time with an offer to put him in the first violin section, discretion became the better part of valor. "It was one of the few times in my life that I went against my parents' opinion, but it may have been the most important decision I ever made. I stayed with the B.S.O. for three years and learned a vast amount of repertoire which I had never known before. The first time I ever played the Bruckner Fifth was the first time I ever heard the Bruckner Fifth. My stand partner was an old Bostonian who muttered: 'Bruckner reminds me of a rainy day in the cemetery.' But we played

Extractions: Here's an excerpt from a letter Haydn sent from London to a friend back home in Vienna describing the crossing the channel to Dover and his first impressions of the British capital: "During the entire crossing I remained on deck, in order to sate my eyes with that monstrous animal, the sea. So long as there was no wind, I was not afraid, but finally as the wind grew stronger and I saw the high unruly waves breaking against the ship, I felt a little alarm, and with it a little nausea. However, I overcame it and came safely into the harbor without vomiting. Most of the other passengers, however, were sick, and looked like ghosts. Even so, I took two days to recover, but now am quite brisk and merry again, and am looking at London. The vast city quite amazes me by its various beauties and wonders. My arrival made a great stir all over the town. For 3 days I was bandied about in all the papers. Everyone is curious to meet me. I have already been obliged to eat out 5 times, and might be invited every day if I would, but have to consider my health, not to mention my work!" ALSO ON THIS DATE:

A number of monographs on a variety of musical topics and mostly published in the twentieth century accompanied the Collection. Those that were not hitherto part of the Library's collections have been classed and cataloged as ML31.S6 and cited on the Library's online public access catalog (OPAC). Books of which the Library already had multiple copies were transferred to the Library's Exchange and Gift Division; the title pages of each were photocopied and are filed in the Music Division's Slonimsky Collection Processing File.

Patterns in the type of work habits and attitudes which Kochañski brought to these collaborations are suggested by examining the violinist's endeavors in the following steps: (1) a biographical sketch outlining Kochañski's professional importance and qualifications including (2) an overview of his collaborations, (3) the relationship between the violinist's personal manuscript collection and his career, and, in the second part of this paper, (4) connections between the collection and Szymanowski's violin writing of 1915-16, (5) Kochañski's work habits and (6) attitudes as reflected through the collection, as well as (7) conclusions offering insights into his collaborative work.

Canzonetta - Andante Introuduction And Rondo capriccioso For Violin and Orchestra, Op.28 Average customer rating: I received this CD for my birthday and loved it. The Chaconne in particular is very expressive and beautiful; it really tells a story. The accompaniment is also amazing, the effect is much more dramatic when you have a full orchestra backing you up. Maybe the selection of music could have been a bit more varied, but I was still extremely upset when I left it in a rental car CD player.
