After 1911 it expanded into local theaters and emerged as a non-profit concert series of international artists, open to all. Many of the artists, unknown at the time of their engagement here, have since become legend; some have been relegated to oblivion, but all contributed in some measure to the musical life of Omaha. It has been estimated that in the first 70 years following the change from club to non-profit organization, Tuesday Musical brought 95 percent of the world's greatest artists to Omaha. Here is a partial list of artists who have been part of this pioneer endeavor:

With performance venues ranging from the concert stage to soup kitchens and from presidential inaugurals to juvenile correctional facilities, the Quartet continues to uphold its mission to create new and diverse audiences for the field of chamber music. On September 30, 1989, the members of the Marian Anderson String Quartet, then known as the Chaminade Quartet, came together unaware that they would soon change history. In 1991, the Quartet won the International Cleveland Quartet Competition, becoming the first African-American ensemble in history to ever win a classical music competition. To highlight this singular achievement, the members of the Quartet asked permission of the great contralto Marian Anderson to use her name as their own. Miss Anderson responded with heartfelt approval and in a memorable show of gratitude, the newly named Marian Anderson String Quartet played for its legendary namesake and her nephew, conductor James DePreist.

No stranger to Central New York audiences, Nakamatsu has performed with both the Syracuse Symphony and Rochester Philharmonic Orchestras, in addition to recording with the RPO. ³Jon Nakamatsu is a truly wonderful artist, and a good friend and colleague of myself and the Rochester Philharmonic,² reflects RPO conductor Christopher Seaman. ³We have done many concerts with him, comprising of concertos with the Orchestra, chamber music with some of our musicians, and a most successful CD of Rachmaninov concertos. His mastery of the piano, his artistry and ability to communicate make him one of my favorite soloists.² ³Nakamatsu performed the Rhapsody (on a Theme of Paganini) with the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra in October (2001) and captured audiences with his imagination and understated showmanship. He is a craftsman blessed with a compelling mix of emotion and precision...² wrote David Ramsey in a Jan 6, 2002 Syracuse Post-Standard review of Rachmaninov Piano Concert No. 3 , which he recorded with the Rochester Philharmonic on Harmonia Mundi Recordings. The ladies of The Morning Musicals presented their recitals for each other without printed programs, but every few years, through 1908, they published complete printed compilations of those programs, as well as resumes of all their other activities. Those program booklets, along with an early scrapbook and a wealth of other information found at the Onondaga Historical Association was invaluable, as was the knowledgeable and sympathetic assistance of the Historical Association's Edward Lyon and Judy Haven. Information about later activities was less easy to verify. A mass of printed, typed, or handwritten documents found in the CMM office at the Civic Center was useful, but often both incomplete and contradictory. To date, no complete collection of printed concert programs or of the minutes of the organization's meetings has been found.

Extractions: FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER March 14, 2004 Charles Ives wrote music that was sprawling, cacophonous, thorny and dissonant but also filled with New England hymns, patriotic songs, backyard tunes and band marches. Ives' music is filled with contrariness and contradiction. But then, so is America. Ives, who died in 1954, remains the quintessential American voice in classical music. The 11th annual Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival, June 12-27, will mark the 50th anniversary of his death. Based in Bloomfield Hills, the 2004 festival features 20 concerts throughout metro Detroit. Artistic director and pianist James Tocco has programmed such key Ives works as the Piano Trio, First Violin Sonata, song cycles and iconoclastic pieces for two pianos tuned a quarter-tone apart. Ives' music will be heard throughout the festival and in a concert devoted solely to his works. Other highlights include a piano duo recital by Richard and John Contiguglia, a solo piano recital by Ruth Laredo and "Snapshots," a multimedia concert at the State Theatre in downtown Detroit by the New York-based Elements String Quartet.

In view of the extent of our work since our last "Best of..." feature, we shift formats this year, presenting our selections in list form, chronologically arrayed, with comments on some of them from individual writers. Ward observed that his and other writers' predilections are reflected in the choices, and that's certainly true; Ward also notes that concerts omitted here were not necessarily inferior. And Walker was aware of the challenges, writing that it was virtually impossible to pick only five events from among the many attended, some on series not heretofore covered by CVNC (or at our writers' prior platforms). Ward Otten announced that this was his first recital devoted exclusively to a single composer and his first devoted to a single compositional type, both occasioned, of course, by the aforementioned upcoming presentation. Liszt wrote approximately 200 transcriptions ranging from operas to art songs, symphonies, and other piano compositions. They vary in style from faithful transpositions of the material that remain fairly literal to completely free, not to say free-wheeling reworkings that are really entirely new works. Otten indicated that the program of seven works would offer a sampling of both types. He opened with "Senta's Ballad" from Wagner's The Flying Dutchman Otten followed these with the Concert Paraphrase on Verdi's Rigoletto from 1867. A paraphrase is, as its title indicates, a retelling in summary of the model's themes. This was for Liszt more elaborate and freer than a transcription but perhaps less evolved and wide-ranging than the works he called "Fantaisies" or Fantasies Liszt always used the French spelling which were not represented on the program. H O wing to her self-motivation and thirst for knowledge, Rose Grainger was a well-educated woman. A tomboy in her early years, she matured into a reader of Greek mythology and the writings of Dickens, Hans Christian Andersen, and Byron. They range from the performances of our own orchestra and band, to visiting soloist, to modern country, rock and folk bands. To no surprise the music has changed throughout the decades. In the 30's more musicians came to perform at Elon. In the early 30's our first performance of Handels " Messiah " was given. This is a tradition that has lasted to the present day at Elon. Earle Spicer in 1938, accompanied by Mude Freeman performed at Elon. Spicer, a baritone, who began singing in his boyhood has appeared before crowned heads and royalties of Europe and has been a soloist with many of the worlds leading orchestras. Francis Hall and Rudolph Gruen also gave a piano duet. The 60's brought more and more artists here to Elon. George Shearing and Quintet performed at Elon's Mid-Winter dance, as well as Ralph Marterie and his Orchestra. Natalie Bondana, a lyric soprano and famous opera singer also performed. Thomas Richner, a New York musician, gave a Piano and Organ recital. Virgil Fox also gave a concert in 1962 at the May Day concert. Alivio Diaz, a classical guitarist performed. Eddie Allen and his Orchestra in 1963 which featured Sheryl as their vocalist, played the Homecoming Dance. The 70's brought more artists. Goose Creek Symphony, Herbie Mann, Jimmy Buffet and his band Coral Reefers Band, The Outlaws, Elvin Bishop, Linda Ronstandt, Earl Scruggs Reven, and Mountain all gave wonderful performances that were highly accepted by their audiences. In 1974 the beginnings of the college radio station were forming. WELN 91.1 was to broadcast rock, country, educational and political messages to Elon listeners. WELN 91.1 didn't actually start until 1977 due to complications and funding.

Everyone seems to be sitting in the pews on the left. Had Auburn's Westminster Presbyterian been a nonstop commuter jet from Syracuse to Tampa, the pilot would have announced over the speakers: "Would some of our passengers please mind moving to the right side of the plane, for purposes of weight distribution." You sit on the right and everyone in the building knows this is your first piano concert. I sat on the right. But Jon Nakamatsu was stunning from either side. You had come to this Adams Foundation piano recital, previously believing that two people playing Chopsticks side-by-side was the most impressive thing that could be done with a piano. So crisp, so flawless, and so beautiful. And it was in Auburn. It was in Westminster Presbyterian, but it could have just as easily been at Carnegie Hall. It was a Van Cliburn award winner and here he was in Auburn, our Auburn, giving us the same performance as he has given to the bluebloods in Boston or the VonRichandwealthies in Vienna. And Nakamatsu loved the Auburn audience. This world-class pianist who had played before larger and more distinguished crowds felt the awe and the warmth that surrounded him in this small venue. Not only did he deliver a marvelous two-hour program, but he returned for an encore.
