Extractions: CONTENTS We have witnessed a number of changes in DCU over recent months. The original Albert College building has been revamped and now provides hospitality venues for staff and visitors; it will be particularly useful as a place in which to host university events. I hope the College will be used for many graduate events such as class reunions, networking meetings and awards ceremonies. We also took the opportunity to highlight the issue of access and participation in higher education. It remains a disappointment that while ten per cent of the population are registered as having a disability only two per cent of our students are registered as disabled; nationally the participation levels are even worse, with only one per cent of CAO offers going to students with disabilities. Much more needs to be done to encourage disabled secondary students, supported by their parents and their teachers, to aspire to education beyond the Leaving Certificate. Increasingly, DCU has to look to non-state sources of income to fund key university projects and initiatives such as the access programme, which is aimed making third-level education accessible to students from disadvantaged areas.
