Extractions: The name Van Cliburn has probably been familiar to more people than the name of any other classical musician since Cliburn won the First International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1958, at the height of the Cold War. For an American to be so warmly received in Russia and to win the top prize in the prestigious Russian music competition was a stunning accomplishment, especially given the political atmosphere at the time. Following his triumph in Moscow, Cliburn played in several cities in the Soviet Union, and from that time on, he toured widely and frequently. He performed with every major orchestra and conductor and appeared in all of the important international concert halls. Between 1960 and 1972, Cliburn toured the Soviet Union four times. He made many timeless and popular recordings of major piano concertos and of a wide variety of solo repertoire. Cliburn has performed for every President of the United States since Harry Truman and for royalty and heads of state in Europe, Asia, and South America. At the height of his career, Van Cliburn still found time to give his name, talents, and energies to the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. First held in 1962, the Competition is a living legacy to Van Cliburns commitment to aiding the development of young artists.

Extractions: May 11, 2001 PIANIST VAN CLIBURN TO RECEIVE HONORARY DEGREE FROM SOUTHERN METHODIST UNIVERSITY DALLAS (SMU) Southern Methodist University will confer an honorary Doctor of Arts degree upon pianist Van Cliburn during its 86th annual commencement ceremony at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 19, in Moody Coliseum, 6024 Airline Road. In 1958, at the height of the Cold War, 23-year-old Texan Van Cliburn won the first International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, making him the first classical musician for whom the city of New York has thrown a ticker-tape parade. He later became one of the highest paid concert pianists of his generation, performing with every major orchestra and conductor and appearing in all of the internationally renowned concert halls. He has made many timeless and popular recordings of major piano concertos, and has developed a vast solo repertoire. The recording he made with Kiril Kondrashin, the Russian conductor with whom he played his 1958 prize-winning performance in Moscow "Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1" has sold more than three million copies worldwide. In 1962, he established the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, which is held every four years in Fort Worth to encourage the development of young artists. In 1987, after an extended sabbatical, Cliburn performed at the White House at a state dinner honoring Mikhail Gorbachev, then the Soviet Union's General Secretary. Two years later, and 31 years after his triumph at the Tchaikovsky Competition, Cliburn returned to the Soviet Union to perform at the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory and in Leningrad, which is today St. Petersburg.

Extractions: These are the live recordings of my performances in the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs, held in Fort Worth, Texas (June 2000). This unusual event was a highlight of my year. It's for pianists who are over 35 and out of practice: no professionals allowed. Contestants play purely for the love of it. The pianists who come, about a hundred of them, are from dozens of countries and all walks of life: the chemist from Japan; the Brazilian ambassador; the blackjack dealer from Reno; the autoglass repairman, surgeon, lawyer, numismatist, masseur, assistant manager from Starbuck's, flight attendant... What a dazzling array of human interest. On stage, settling down at the gleaming Steinway concert grand, they glowed like 500-watt bulbs, and the audience was on the edge of their seats, hanging on every note. Music for the pure, unalloyed joy of it. Great stuff. I've always felt that part of the fun in being a true amateur comes from the mistakes, and the excitement in not knowing how well you might do. Professionalism (suggesting perfectionism) kills that spontaneity. Anyway, you might as well learn to love those pesky mistakes. Even Franz Liszt hit a few clams from time to time, but he didn't call them mistakes: he called them uninvited guests, and always tried to make them feel right at home. Or Rubinstein, who used to say: Well, sometimes I
