Biographical Sketches From "The Worlds Best Music" His musical education was conducted at the conservatory at Leipzig, under Moscheles. In company with his brothers, Leopold and Gerhard, he made several concert tours in which he rarely failed to draw large and enthusiastic audiences. In 1866 he was appointed instructor at Sterns' Conservatorium in Berlin, but he resigned this position in 1868 to take a similar one at the Brussels Conservatoire. Later he removed to the conservatory at St. Petersburg. Among his best known compositions are "Der Thronfolger", an operetta, twelve etudes de concert, and a considerable number of galops and waltzes.

Among his CDs and records solo albums, many piano duo performances (with Sara Fuxon in Duo Beer Shevaand with Meir Wiesel in Duo 4), as well as with various other artists, occasionaly as a member of larger ensembles. Table 1 contains all of Bart Berman's 14 audio units. When a picture appears in the leftmost column it is indicated that the unit appeared on CD, and likewise the right column indicates an analogue (long play record or audio tape) publication. Many of Bart Berman's records were re-issued on CD. In this case, there will be pictures in both columns. While some of the titles are easy to find at larger (web-)music distributors, others were made by specialized companies, whom at times published the CD or record in a limited quantity.
Extractions: The wealth of music making in late 18C London attracted musicians from all over Europe. Johann Christian Bach (1735-82) lived in London and Joseph Haydn (1732-1809), paid much-publicised visits to the capital. In addition to public and private concerts there was an increasing amount of amateur music-making resulting in a boom in the sale of musical instruments, most notably pianos.

Telarc Classics Piano Concertos by Grieg and Liszt/Busoni partners the wonderfully Romantic Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 16 by Edvard Grieg with the lesser-known work, Rhapsodie éspagnole by Franz Liszt, arranged by Ferrucio Busoni. It is a result of Liszts Spanish tour in 1845 and features two joyous dances: Folies d'Espagne and Juta Aragonesa. This CD also includes a recording of Fauré's Fantasie for piano and orchestra. Piano Concertos by Schumann and Kuhlau In 1841, Schumann began composing a one-movement fantasy, which was later revised and became his one and only Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 54, completed in c. 1845. Like the Grieg Piano Concerto, which was inspired by this work, it is consumed with Romanticism. Kuhlau only wrote two concertos, Concertino for 2 French horns (Op. 45) and the Piano Concerto, Op. 7 performed here. It is one of Kuhlaus more significant works and its structure is similar to Beethovens early concertos, whom he met during his many travels. This CD also features Saint-Saëns Wedding Cake for piano and orchestra. This lively, dance-like caprice valse was composed in 1886 as a wedding present for pianist, Caroline de Serres. The polish born pianist, Felicja Blumental, made a speciality of performing music outside the standard repertory, touring extensively throughout Europe and Latin America to great acclaim. Ms Blumental was a respected pianist to whom several 20th century composers dedicated works (Villa-Lobos, Penderecki and Lutoslawski). Brana Records continue her legacy with a further two CDs. Piano Concertos by Rachmaninoff and Hummel (BR0012) and Piano Concertos by Tchaikovsky and Arensky (BR0013).

Extractions: Being a great Horowitz fan, I just had to find out how the master would fare in a non-transcribed Bach work. Just like Michelangeli, Horowitz was of the opinion that a pianist should study the whole reperoire, but be selective in the works to be played in front of an audience. While his Bach-Busonis do not represent the heights of his discography -just compare with Lipatti-, I do consider Horowitz Scarlatti as one of the milestones in the history of recorded sound. So how is the Bach? Very interesting!

Your squarewave MIDI card sounds (ahem) less than perfect? Maybe all you need is TiMidity++ ... it features superior instrument patches, it's Linux or Windows friendly, has no hiss, and if your computer is recent (five years old or less,) offers perfect real-time performance. In my opinion, it's about as good as having the hardware... it's certainly more versatile. (Or maybe it's just that your players need a little warm-up before the performance...) performed by yours truly.... Bach, Johann Sebastian This is my first experience sequencing a piece with a figured bass part. In Baroque music, pieces were often written to be played by varying ensembles. They included a stave that contained the chords or principal notes to be played, but which were to be interpreted and improvised upon by the performers. Since these ensembles could vary from performance to performance, this figured stave was important. Hence, I have improvised the harpsichord accompaniment, giving these sequences their own unique flavor, and my interpretation of a Bach cantata.

Extractions: University of Iowa News Release Feb. 26, 2004 Pianist McKamie Presents March 9 Recital At UI Pianist David McKamie will play a free recital as a guest of the University of Iowa School of Music at 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 9 in Harper Hall of the Voxman Music Building. MaKamie, who is professor and coordinator of piano at Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo., will play four pieces, spanning the Baroque period to the 20th century: French Suite No. 5 in G major by Johann Sebastian Bach. Sonata No. 7, op. 83, by Sergei Prokofiev. McKamie made the following comments on his program: "The French Suite in G Major is one of my favorite Bach suites. It was a work played by my father, William McKamie, who was professor of piano at Baylor University, and is one that I grew up hearing at home. "Its seven movements include the four standard dances of the Baroque suite allemande, courante, sarabande and gigue with three optional movements inserted between the sarabande and gigue. Each movement has the same structure, starting in G major and moving to E minor in the second half of the movement to provide a brief emotional contrast." "Brahms' Four Piano Pieces, op. 119, were published in 1893 and are the last set of character pieces that he wrote. It consists of three intermezzos that grow progressively more animated, leading to the fourth piece, the Rhapsody in E-Flat Major. A striking feature about the Rhapsody is that it ends in E-flat minor, giving a certain sense of drama to the conclusion of the set.
