Extractions: "The Rediscovered Piano Sonatas," Volume I, of Muzio Clementi (1752-1832), contains six piano sonatas. The three sonatas of Opus 10 were edited from the 'revised' autographs, copies of which were obtained from The British Library (London). To the knowledge of the editor, these revised versions were never published. The original versions of the Opus 10 piano sonatas were composed in 1783. The revisions were made after 1800, according to Tyson's "Thematic Catalogue of the Works of Muzio Clementi." Also included in Volume I are three sonatas, previously unavailable for purchase in modern notation. These sonatas were edited from authentic 19th-century editions. The volume measures 9 x 12.25 and is 'wiro' bound for the pianist's convenience. The sonatas of Volume I will be recorded on the Calcante Records label in the near future. The projected Volume II in this series will contain the earliest surviving composition of Clementi, written in 1775. This sonata, exhibiting incredible stylistic maturity, was edited from the unpublished autograph of the 13-year-old Clementi. Also included will be various sonatas edited from autograph or 19th- century editions.

In the absence of time travel, we can only dream of being present at these moments in musical history. It is just such a moment that forms the inspiration for this CD. On Christmas Eve 1781, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Muzio Clementi took part in a 'musical playing' contest in Vienna. Emperor Josef II staged the contest as an entertainment for his guests, the Grand Duke and Duchess of Russia. The two musicians were called upon to improvise, sight-read and perform selections from their own compositions. The Emperor was unable to decide who was the better performer and so declared the contest a tie.

Extractions: "My enthusiasm for playing the piano and my curiosity, how the great masterpieces of the 19th century might have been realized on the original instruments, were the motives for my engagement in antique pianos and at least the foundation of the Klavieratelier. I played piano since my childhood; so I began to study seriously after school at the Hochschule, now University of Music in Vienna. With the Gamerith-Consort I toured one and a half year through various European countries. To play chambermusic of Haydn and Mozart an an original Walter-grand from about 1800 was absolutely influencing and "correcting" my playing and my fingertechnique - I had to change from the modern piano to a very early type of the fortepiano.

"Ludwig van Beethoven is arguably one of the most original composers who ever lived. His composing career began in the last decade of the 18th century and ended with his death in 1827, and thus spanned from the Classical to the Romantic period. In his youth, he studied under F. Joseph Haydn, one of the greatest Classical composers; in his maturity, he anticipated the Romantic style which was later fully realized in the works of Schubert, Schumann, Berlioz and Chopin, among others. Although Beethoven is rightfully acknowledged as a brilliant innovator, he was not without his influences. The goal of this research is to establish the influence of a particular composer, the Italian pianist and composer Muzio Clementi, on Beethoven's keyboard compositions.
