Jiebing Chen, Erhu Player In that year, chen began a stellar collaboration with pianist andcomposer Jon Jang and legendary jazz percussionist Max Roach. http://www.jiebingchen.com/jiebing/biography.shtml
Extractions: We hope you enjoy the new look! Jiebing Chen has been hailed as one of the foremost erhu virtuosos in the world. Her world-renowned is based on her mastery of the classical Chinese repertory for the erhu and for her award-winning contemporary innovations using the two-stringed instrument. Chen's incredible musicality and interpretive skills have resulted in overwhelming international acclaim as a solo interpreter of her instrument. Beyond that, with Chinese, American and European orchestras Chen was the first to bring the erhu into the symphonic concert hall, performing as a featured soloist. Her playing brought a new sound and excitement to classical music audiences. Perhaps most compelling are her achievements as a cross-cultural performer. Chen has virtually reinvented the erhu for the 21 st century, performing in partnership with some of the most notable jazz and world music artists of our time. Her artistry has made her the most recorded erhu artist in the world with over 20 CD titles available internationally. In addition to her classical repertory Chen's work received a Grammy-nomination for Best World Music Album for her jazz improvisations with Bela Fleck and Vishwa Bhatt.

In addition to her classical repertory, Chen's work received a Grammy-nomination for Best World Music Album for her jazz improvisations with Bela Fleck and Vishwa Bhatt. For the first time, using the erhu as a solo instrument with Western orchestral accompaniment, Chen performed with the Shanghai Symphony and chamber orchestras at the Shanghai Concert Hall. These concerts were broadcast along with other concerts on radio and television in China. They brought Chen enormous popular acclaim and special recognition as one of the erhu virtuosos in China. As a Chinese cultural exchange artist, Chen toured Australia, Asian and Europe. She was awarded the All-China "Best Player" award of Shanghai Spring Festival.

Extractions: [72:33] full-price by William Beh Having attended the concerts which preceded these recordings ( Flute Moon was performed on Jan 22, 2000 ), I can still remember distinctly, on the occasion, being overdosed and underwhelmed on the musical language of Bright Sheng. Listening to it again, after six months, it doesn't seem to sound as underwrought as one recalls. More importantly, this recording might just be the foothold by which Sheng's music can receive some serious critical assessment. Bright Sheng comes from the generation of Chinese-American artists who lived through and survived the Cultural Revolution. Today, they form an active company of composers (including Tan Dun, Chen Yi and Zhou Long) who draw upon both Western and Oriental influences in a fusion of styles, while constantly struggling to refine their craft and pushing back, in so many ways, their boundaries of expression. In their own way, they are a barometric indication of modern compositional tastes and styles. That said, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra is surprisingly conversant with Sheng's unique musical stylings, having had a long association with his music. The relationship goes back as far as 5 August 1994 when they gave the world premiere of

Extractions: Since her nomination as 1994 Pro Piano Artist of the Year and her Alice Tully Hall recital debut in 1996, J.Y. Song has established herself as a musician with broad and idiosyncratic musical tastes. Critic Harris Goldsmith has noted her "truly astounding technical and imaginative resources," and has described her performances as "tigerishly intense" and "exquisite." In addition to her probing interpretations of traditional repertoire, J.Y. Song has received critical acclaim for her performances of twentieth-century music, and has established a large following among audiences at contemporary music festivals. Her recordings on the Pro Piano label, which have received rave reviews in international publications, include twentieth-century masterpieces by Debussy, Bartok, and the young Argentinean composer, Ezequiel Vinao. Billboard described the complete set of Debussy Etudes as a "gem," and In Tune remarked "besides sheer technique, Song displays magnificent intellect in all her mood painting." The Debussy Etudes recording was a "Desert Island Selection" in Gramophone Magazine's International Piano Quarterly. J.Y. Song was raised in Switzerland, where she studied at the Conservatoire de Geneve and the Conservatoire de Lausanne. She later attended Stanford University, graduating with distinction and honors with a bachelor of science in microbiology and immunology as well as a bachelor of arts in music. While doing research on malaria and co-authoring a paper which appeared in Molecular and Biochemical Parasitology, J.Y. Song received numerous musical awards from Stanford, including the Robert Golden Medal for excellence in performance and the prestigious Sudler Prize for outstanding achievement in the creative arts.

Recent concerto appearances include the Tan Dun Concerto for Pizzicato Piano with the Oberlin Contemporary Music Ensemble (under the composer's direction); the Bartok Concerto No. 1 with the Northwestern University Symphony Orchestra; and the Stefan Wolpe Piece for Piano and Sixteen Instruments, a performance which was the centerpiece of Northwestern's international Wolpe festival. Jacob Greenberg served for three years as principal keyboardist of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, with whom he also played extensively as a chamber musician. As an orchestral player, he has also performed with the Israel Philharmonic and the New World Symphony. Other ensemble performances include Symphony Center's MusicNOW series (with members of the Chicago Symphony), the Fulcrum Point New Music Project , and the Contemporary Chamber Players of the University of Chicago.
