At The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD), you get the latest class of Eugene McDermott Scholars - a group of extremely talented young men and women with a penchant for academic excellence and community activism. Modeled after the prestigious Morehead Scholars program at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, the UTD program was made possible by a $32 million gift - the largest in UTD's history - from Mrs. Margaret McDermott, wife of the late Eugene McDermott, one of the co-founders of Texas Instruments. McDermott and his TI co-founders, Cecil Green and the late Erik Jonsson, also founded the research institution that in 1969 became UTD. In the two years since Mrs. McDermott's gift formally launched the initiative and the inaugural class was admitted for the fall semester of the 2001-02 academic year, the program has attracted 55 scholars, about half of them from the Dallas area. Eight have come from the Richardson Independent School District - five from Richardson High School alone.

Extractions: For the development of classical music in Taiwan, the group has made plans for a series of concerts to introduce the classical music to the audiences with thematic system. Having received unanimous praise for their authoritative and engaging performances, they were chosen by the government to represent Taiwan in the International Music Festival in Costa Rica as well as 5 major cities in the United States in 1995. In 1996, they got the scholarship to study with the pianist of the Beaux Arts Trio Mr. Menahem Pressler, the pianist of great renown in Banff, and they gave performances there for their studies. In the mean time, they were invited very often for local performances, not only giving performances to the public but also introducing the detail of the pieces that have touched the lives of inner-city people. Three years ago, they started to give the series of weekend concerts every month both in Taipei and Taichung, 2 of the major cities in Taiwan. In the weekend concerts, they present different kinds of classical music to the people. 1999, they were invited to give their performance in the International FAME Festival in New Jersey, U.S. This coming November Ars Trio Taipei will be giving a series of concerts.¡¨ Might be a good idea to add in where these concerts will be.

Extractions: The Hudson Valley is a microcosm of the changing American landscape. Its pattern of rapid growth has transformed a once rural area into a kaleidoscope of cities, industrial hubs, suburbs, farms, and wilderness. Its promise, problems, and challenges mirror those of the nation as a whole, and it thus provides the ideal locale for the pioneering programs of The Bard Center. Established in 1978, The Bard Center develops pacesetting educational and scholarly programs with a recognized nationwide impact. It promotes the study of the liberal arts and sciences as they relate to issues of public planning and decision making in and beyond the Hudson River Valley. These programs enrich the intellectual, cultural, and social experience of Bard undergraduates and establish a network of academic and professional centers beyond the campus.

We have heard every numbered opus by Arnold Schoenberg with the exception of one or two which I simply have been unable to find. In addition, the master also wrote several unnumbered pieces, generally based upon works by other composers. We will end our year long examination of Schoenberg, then, with a broadcast of his Concerto for String Quartet and Orchestra (after Handel) (1933). From time to time, as I acquire some of his other transcriptions, I will give them pride of place. 1.
