Extractions: Francesco Caramiello, a pianist who made some recordings of music of Giuseppe Martucci and Giovanni Sgambati, gave solid, fairly persuasive performances of several of Martuccis shorter piano works. Allan Kozinn in "The New York Times" Francesco Caramiello disposes of technical qualities to get the dicculties of the concerto (Sgambati) under control easily, and he disposes of an interpretative instinct that makes virtuosity in substance , too . The races on the whole keyboard have sometimes, something mysterious and demoniac which is not in the notes in themselves, that's shown here. Nürnberger Philharmoniker have let themselves be contaminated and have engaged a duel with the solist whose the involved audience has been witness. W. Bronnenmeyer in "Nürnberger Zeitung" The young artist stood out to the honours of the news for a valuabe recording of Martucci's concertos for piano and orchestra with the Philarmonia Orchestra in London. He's one of the artists who gives little importance to the outward the pianist shows all his talent: he moves with among all the composers in his program easily : Martucci, naturally, the author who, more than everyone, gave fame to him, the " Tema con variazioni"

Extractions: Robert R. Reilly Because this column usually focuses on a specific composer or theme, I have fallen behind in bringing to your attention a flood of excellent individual releases. Herewith is an attempt to catch up in time for your summer vacation. Summer is full of moments for music that is not meant to storm the heavens but to delight the listener. Such was the vocation of Luigi Boccherini (1743-1805), certainly a composer who deserves and will get his own article in a future column. But why wait to entertain yourself with his 28 symphonies? They are deliciously offered in a complete eight-CD set by the CPO label, with the Deutsche Kammerakademie Neuss, under conductor Johannes Goritzki. The delights on these CDs are innumerable, and the level of invention so high that one is tempted to call Boccherini the Spanish Haydn (or the Italian Haydn who happened to live in Spain). This conclusion is borne out by the Naxos labels second release in its series of Boccherinis Cello Concertos (Nos. 5-8), performed by cellist Tim Hugh and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Anthony Halstead. For something effervescent, the CPO label also offers Boccherinis Six Flute Quintets, Op. 55, with flutist Michael Faust and the Auryn Quartet. Richer fare appears on the Virgin Veritas label in the form of Boccherinis superb String Quintets Nos. 1, 4, 5, and 6, from Op. 25, and the imperishable Minuetto from Quintet No. 5, Op 11. Though I usually deplore original-instrument performances, violinist Fabio Biondi and his Europa Galante quintet are so musical that I was completely won over.

Extractions: in LECCE, ITALY, from JULY 9-20, 2003 From July 9 to July 20, The Miami International Piano Festival will present an International Piano Festival and a Symposium on the Taubman Approach in collaboration with Edna Golandsky . Ms. Golandsky is the leading exponent of the Taubman Approach to Virtuosity. The nine-day International Piano Festival and Symposium on the Taubman Approach will take place in the beautiful baroque city of Lecce, Italy, and will present the very best of the keyboard world in an atmosphere as magical as the music itself. "This is an ideal situation," says Edna Golandsky. "Within an exciting atmosphere of listening and learning, we will be able to use the Taubman Approach to share the possibility of being a pianist without limitation, fatigue, or pain. The Taubman Approach illuminates the complex and mostly invisible movements that result in a virtuoso technique."

Hindemith), Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Mozart, Op. 132. For those of you who find Reger's orchestration too thick, Paul Hindemith is on your side! In 1958, Hindemith produced an edition of Psalm 100 (1908-09) which thins out the orchestration, particularly the four horns and removes much of the organ's part which obscured the choral parts. It also reasigns vocal lines to instruments as new entries appear in the closing fugue, also in the interest of clarity and cuts 11 bars of the fugue to tighten the structure. Worth hearing whether you know the original version or not! Russian State Symphonic Capella and Symphony Orchestra; Valeri Polyansky. Chandos 9917 (England) LEOPOLD GODOWSKY (1870-1938): Passacaglia, Piano Sonata in E Minor. Two recordings of Godowsky's mammoth sonata of 1910/11 in four months seems hard to believe but collectors who bought Konstantin Scherbakov's Marco Polo performance (10D010) will certainly want to hear this brilliant pianist's interpretation (and you can find a description of the work in the October catalogue). Here, the filler is the rather more substantial Passacaglia, 44 Variations, Cadenza and Fugue on the Opening of Schubert's "Unfinished" Symphony, to give the 1927 work its full title. It's 19 minutes are a reverent and weighty tribute to Schubert, noble and majestic and displaying the expected wide range of invention and variety of textures and harmonic activity. This is probably the most spectacular digital recording we've ever heard, both for imaging, clarity and dynamic range. It's astonishing that it was made in 1978, using the "Soundstream" system which lost out to other, large-corporately-financed systems. The repertoire is (strangely) still under-represented in the catalogue but, in recordings like these, it wouldn't matter if there were dozens of versions available! London Symphony Orchestra; Morton Gould. Citadel CTD 88130 (U.S.A.) GORDON JACOB (1895-1984): Mini Concerto for Clarinet and Strings, Concertino for Clarinet and Strings (after Tartini), Clarinet Quintet, Clarinet Trio. Resolutely tonal and Romantic in style, these pieces, even the apparently ludicrously brief Mini Concerto, display a depth of feeling that is all too often lacking in 20th-century music. There is more than a hint of English pastoral throughout, but the music never sounds like the more familiar composers associated with that phrase, except fleetingly and superficially, and there is much beauty to savor here. Warmly recommended. Charles Russo (clarinet), Premier Chamber Orchestra; David Gilbert. Premier PRCD 1052 (U.S.A.)
