Extractions: No 1 in G, Op 78 ; No 2 in A, Op 100; No 3 in D minor, Op 108 Lorin Maazel, the famous conductor showed the BBCM that it was not only conducting he excelled at: he was also a splendid violinist. To mark his 70th birthday he played all three of Brahms' violin-piano sonatas from memory, partnered by the Russian-Israeli pianist Yefim Bronfman. The three Brahms sonatas were all written within the same decade from 1878 to 1888 but the third one is markedly different from the first two. Brahms started to write it at the same time as the second sonata but he finished it two years later. The contrast in the mood of these sonatas allowed Maazel to demonstrate a wide range of skills as a violinist. He played the first two sonatas softly, so as to put the spotlight on the most famous and most demanding D minor sonata. Even at 70 Maazel is in the prime of his career. After the concert we went backstage to meet the man himself: he was extremely interested in the work we did at the BBCM. Matthew Gold (Peanut)
Shepherd Express Metro: In Review CLASSICAL MUSIC. A Towering pianist. BY Rick Walters. pianist yefim bronfman isthe most technically brilliant artist we ve heard in this city in some time. http://www.shepherd-express.com/shepherd/20/49/night_and_day/in_review.html
Extractions: CLASSICAL MUSIC A Towering Pianist BY Rick Walters Pianist Yefim Bronfman is the most technically brilliant artist we've heard in this city in some time. Considering the soloist-rich last couple of seasons, that's saying a lot. His performance with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra of the Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 1 last weekend was nothing less than stunning. It's not the first concerto that comes to mind when you think of Beethoven's works for piano and orchestra. Bronfman is the kind of towering musical presence who, for the moment, made it sound like the most sparkling piece of music ever written. The long cadenza in the first movement was so thrilling that had it been a Baptist service, the audience would have been shouting "Amen." Bronfman's musical virtues are many: crystalline rolled chords, ornaments so clean they slice the air, the rhythmic buzz of parallel thirds and sixths, the singing tone of a slowly evolving melody. His touch is so secure and his phrasing so directed that it was virtually flawless. I don't know another pianist who has such a satisfying range. The fortes are never roaring beyond control, the pianissimos are always ringing and clear. For all his head shaking, serious approach, there's also a touch of wit and sheer delight that matched the concerto perfectly. Bronfman wasn't the only star at the MSO last weekend. Violinist and conductor Pinchas Zukerman made his first appearance with the orchestra in his role of artist in residence. The concert began, quite unusually, with the

Extractions: During the nineteenth century, before the age of electronically produced sound, there was a strong tradition of music-making in the home. The piano became something of a home entertainment center: every household had or aspired to have one, and this, together with the sheer sociability of making music together, resulted in a thriving market for piano duets. The two-piano duet has a smaller repertoire than the one-piano duet, since it was rare to find two instruments in a single room except in concert halls, colleges of music and the homes of professional musicians and composers. Musically speaking, however, two pianos offer the most varied opportunities, because each performer has the complete range of the keyboard at his disposal, and this makes possible an element of virtuosity inhibited by the comparatively cramped position of two players at one keyboard. Today's program comprises three monuments from the rarely heard duo-piano repertoire: Variations on a Theme of Haydn and the Sonata in F Minor Op. 34bis
