So it was with some anticipation that I attended her recital in Weill Recital Hall (part of the larger Carnegie complex). It could be that DeYoung did not put her best foot forward that evening. Beginning the second half of the program were Six Songs on Poems by D. H. Lawrence Michelle DeYoung must have something on the ball for the vocal world to have responded as positively to her as it has. But these winning qualities were not to the fore in her recent recital. They brought with them the French pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard, who has received some of the most rapturous reviews of the recent period. What was all the fuss about? Was it truly for his pianism, or did it have to do with his steadfast devotion to new music (Aimard has long been a soldier in the army of Pierre Boulez)? Extractions: Having just recently heard a perfomrance of Concerto No. 2, I was knocked out by the beauty and intense beauty of the piece. Learning that he wrote it for his son, a budding pianist explains even more. From the sections that begin as a piano exercise, then bursting forth into joy and full throttled joy, this is sensuous, fun music. No wonder this is included in collections of romanctic piano music. The First Concerto is a fitting tribute of sorts to his job as pianist for a silent theater, with chasing sounds of strings and piano then orchestra along with some brilliant solo trumpet.

Extractions: This is an absolutely fantastic collection of interpretations. The nuances are so brilliantly, yet subtly, incorporated, and Bronfmans tone is amazing. My favorite is probably the second sonata ... in the first movement he produces such a fantastic, eerie sensation in the second theme. The last movement was so exciting and involved, carefully thought through in every way, yet played with a delightful abandon. Ive listened to this CD over and over again and highly recommend it to anyone looking for an absolutely spectacular performance of these sonatas.

Music Review: Symphony Plays With Fire Jansons in one of his last concert weekends; a program that s repeated in New York sCarnegie Hall in two weeks; pianist yefim bronfman s smoldering fingers http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/04066/282052.stm
Extractions: The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra has been playing hot these days, but last night it played as if a fire had been lit beneath it. The return of music director Mariss Jansons in one of his last concert weekends; a program that's repeated in New York's Carnegie Hall in two weeks; pianist Yefim Bronfman's smoldering fingers, perhaps even the "Firebird" herself all of these had a role in this inflamed concert at Heinz Hall. We see our "Fima" Bronf-man so often it obscures how much he improves each year. Let there be no mistake, with his commanding performance of Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 2, the audience is hearing a pianist in the prime of his career. There's a certain dose of audacity in the early works of Prokofiev a daring for daring's sake that seeks to drench the listener in sheer virtuosity because he could. Bronfman's fantastic chops, steady no matter the vigorous attack on the keyboard, rendered his playing true to the bold and brazen heart of the concerto. The once scandalous first-movement cadenza, where Prokofiev essentially replaces the other players with orchestral writing for the piano, was awe-inducing in Bronfman's blurred hands.
