Extractions: Texas singer-songwriter Billy Joe Shaver will make his first Canadian appearance in nearly than two years at a special concert at Hugh's Room, Toronto, on Wednesday December 11. It will be his first Toronto appearance since 1994; prior to that he appeared in the early '80s at the now defunct Concord Tavern. His last Canadian gig was at the Edmonton Folk Festival. Shaver is, indeed, the "real deal." Now 63, he's just released a new record, Freedom's Child (which will be issued in Canada in February), and critical response in the U.S. has been unanimously enthusiastic. His songs have been covered by everyone from Waylon Jennings (his 1973 album Old Five and Dimers Like Me consisted entirely of Billy Joe's songs) to Elvis Presley, George Jones, Willie Nelson, BR 5-49, and the Allman Brothers, to mention a few.

Extractions: Irving is alive and well today (1996), 101 years old on July 4, 1996 Irving is a typical 'Tin Pan Alley' type of composer, writing songs to order. If you have the money, he'll write the song, and it's always a good one. (Irving once remarked that he did not always write 'good', but he always wrote fast.) His songwriting career spans the 1920's to the 1940's. He was the lyricist for the 1924 Broadway musical, 'No, No, Nanette'. The son of Morris and Sofia Selinger Caesar, Irving was born on the 4th of July, in the Henry Street Settlement on New York's lower East Side of Manhattan. His father ran a neighborhood second-hand bookstore. Irving has said that he was just 6 years old when he composed his first poem:

Proposals for setting up another TKTS booth at places such as the South Street Seaport or Bowling Green were suggested and/or realized, but no location has drawn the crowds and become a destination like the one inside the World Trade Center. The 200-seat Soho Playhouse, under Managing Director Dana Matthow, will be donating the space and staff for the benefit. The benefit itself is yet another generous act of altruism: Slaff called up Richard Skipper (AKA Carol Channing) for an endorsement for ArtsVan and Skipper offered to organize the entire benefit instead.
