Extractions: Alfred Brendel is legendary for his ability to convey, with unerring faithfulness, the emotional and intellectual development of the music he performs. In concert and on recordings, Mr. Brendel often plays as though he were following the composer's own train of thought, sharing his discoveries with the listener. This highest accomplishment of the interpreter's art has earned him a place among the great musicians of our time. In the 2001/02 season, Mr. Brendel tours North America playing recital programs of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Brahms in Vancouver, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Houston, Fort Worth, St. Louis, Chicago's Orchestra Hall and in his annual return to New York's Carnegie Hall. During the 1998/99 season, he appeared there six times in a little over three weeks to delight audiences with recitals, chamber music, lieder (joined by German baritone Matthias Goerne) poetry reading, and a Mozart concerto with The MET Orchestra with James Levine. Mr. Brendel's performance at Carnegie Hall on April 26, 1998 marked the exact anniversary of his first public recital fifty years to the date at the Kammermusiksaal in Graz, Austria. For the 2000/01 season Mr. Brendel returned to North America for recitals in New York, Washington D.C., Chicago, Atlanta, Montreal, Ottawa, and Princeton. Under the baton of Seiji Ozawa, Mr. Brendel played three Beethoven piano concerti with the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Extractions: (Philips) Mozart more-or-less invented the piano concerto as we know it today, and not only that, he did it in under a decade - from 1777 to 1786 in Salzburg, a period of inspired creativity framed by these two concertos. The Jeunehomme Well, it turns out there were fewer issues than I expected; Mackerras has such an intelligent attitude towards Mozart (with plenty of period instrument experience to call on), and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra responds with real understanding, the strings particularly seeming to lighten the bow strokes and tone down the vibrato to give a historically informed feel to the whole thing. That slow movement for example - superbly done, with none of the over-emphasis or bogus emotional input that mars some performances. have rubato Andrew McGregor - presenter of CD Review on Radio 3

Extractions: DRUCKEN ALS EMAIL ...
Extractions: Full Review Although it may sound like a cliché, Ludwig van Beethoven was truly one of the greatest composers the world has ever known. Such is his stature, asking any layperson to name a classical composer, and surely his name would be one of the first to be named. This acclaim is not without merit, for Beethoven was truly a revolutionary, prodigious in compositional talent, and the fact that he was completely deaf for much of his later years, makes it all the more astounding that such a repertoire could come from one man. Extractions: H e is not going to do any more cycles of the Beethoven sonatas, and as far as cycles go will confine himself to the Beethoven concertos. Of these there are quite a few in sight. "The first one will be in New York with Kurt Masur, in March; then there are the concertos (not in a cycle, but in individual concerts) with Abbado in Berlin; and later on I shall do cycles with Marriner and the Academy of St Martin's in Paris and in London. I did them with Neville about 18 months ago in Montpelier and that was a very pleasant experience because the orchestra really tried to understand what I wanted and was very cooperative. And then I have the prospect of something in Munich and Vienna. "I just don't feel physically inclined to take the responsibility for very large cycles in the future. What I may do is perhaps a few programmes of Haydn, Mozart and Schubert, for instance, going through the late Mozart sonatas. I want to concentrate on these matters more, and also after a longish interval to go back to some of the Schubert works, with refreshed senses. Work-in-progress, as always, yes. And there's still a case for the rehabilitation of Haydn. My dream of a full Haydn recital I have not yet realized; it may still come. "I also want to spend some time with the Schumann Concerto again. I'm very unsatisfied with what I have done so far and have a number of performances lined up next year to see if I can do better. It's one of those frustrating pieces which seem so obvious on the page and yet, with the first two movements particularly, I so often find there are things still to be desired. The last movement seems to come much more easily, to me at any rate. So I'll try again.

Extractions: F rom the very first, Vox discovered and nurtured the career of this remarkable virtuoso. In the 1950s, Alfred Brendel had already recorded Prokofiev's Fifth Concerto for another label; his first recording for Vox was more Russian music: Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, Balakirev's Islamey and Stravinsky's Three Scenes from "Petrushka." While that was repertory no one would associate with Brendel today, the record created quite a stir, and he then proceeded to record Liszt, Schubert and Beethoven, releasing the complete Beethoven Sonatas in 1961. Brendel went on to record the complete Beethoven piano music including the concerti and choral fantasy, all of which is availble on CD. Use our catalog search function to find all of our fine Brendel recordings. Among Alfred Brendel's early recordings for Vox also were several treasurable collaborations with Walter KlienMozart's Sonata and Concerto for two pianos, and the original four-hand versions of Brahms's Hungarian Dances and Dvorak's Slavonic Dances. Klien stayed on with Vox until the end of his life, recording all the Mozart and Brahms works for piano solo, several of the concertos (in Vienna under Peter Maag, in Minneapolis under Stanislaw Skrowacewski), all the Schubert sonatas, and a broad selection of piano duets with various partners. and two-piano works by Mozart and Schubert.
