Extractions: review of "McTeague" interview with the composer re: "Symphony No. 4 (The Rose)" MOST COMPOSERS who write pieces involving poetry hope that audiences will familiarize themselves with the text before hearing the music. In the case of William Bolcom, whose Symphony No. 4 will be premiered in Powell Hall next weekend by conductor Leonard Slatkin and the St. Louis Symphony, the hope is especially intense. Not that it's necessary to know the poem ahead of time in order to understand it. On the contrary, it's a long but verbally simple poem, and Bolcom has deliberately set it in a way that promises to make its content intelligible to any listener on first hearing. And just in case his mostly syllabic treatments of the words and their generally transparent accompaniments aren't enough to make things perfectly clear, he suggests that the mezzo-soprano soloist be amplified so that she can pay particular attention to matters of diction and nuance. Homework is not required. Nevertheless, Bolcom says, an advance reading of the text - even if it takes place moments before the performance - would give audience members an enormous advantage in appreciating what the entire symphony is about.

Extractions: T Born in Seattle on May 26, 1938, Bolcom studied at Stanford University, with Darius Milhaud in 1958 and with Olivier Messiaen in Paris afterwards before settling in New York in the 1960's, where he immersed himself for a time in the ragtime of Scott Joplin and Eubie Blake, as well as pursuing a fascination for another Blake: the mystical English Romantic poet, William. This latter interest culminated in 1984 with Bolcom's powerful cycle, SONGS OF INNOCENCE AND EXPERIENCE, in which he set forty-six Blake poems for solo voice and piano, orchestra and chorus. Demonstrating a flair for the dramatic, a fondness for experimentation and combination of pre-existing styles with his own dissonant textures and jaunty vernacular idiom, Bolcom's catalogue encompasses the Pulitzer Prize-winning 1988 TWELVE ETUDES FOR PIANO, VIOLIN, CLARINET, FLUTE, AND PIANO, ten string quartets, and five piano concerti. For the stage he has composed a chamber opera, DYNAMITE TONIGHT (1963), GREATSHOT (1969), THEATRE OF THE ABSURD (1970), as well as the highly acclaimed opera based on Frank Norris' novel, MCTEAGUE, which had its premiere at Chicago's Lyric Opera in 1992, and he has constructed many a delightful cabaret evening of his songs, among them the winning AMOR. This unusual event was a highlight of my year. It's for pianists who are over 35 and out of practice: no professionals allowed. Contestants play purely for the love of it. The pianists who come, about a hundred of them, are from dozens of countries and all walks of life: the chemist from Japan; the Brazilian ambassador; the blackjack dealer from Reno; the autoglass repairman, surgeon, lawyer, numismatist, masseur, assistant manager from Starbuck's, flight attendant... What a dazzling array of human interest. On stage, settling down at the gleaming Steinway concert grand, they glowed like 500-watt bulbs, and the audience was on the edge of their seats, hanging on every note. Music for the pure, unalloyed joy of it. Great stuff. I've always felt that part of the fun in being a true amateur comes from the mistakes, and the excitement in not knowing how well you might do. Professionalism (suggesting perfectionism) kills that spontaneity. Anyway, you might as well learn to love those pesky mistakes. Even Franz Liszt hit a few clams from time to time, but he didn't call them mistakes: he called them uninvited guests, and always tried to make them feel right at home. Extractions: It is a pleasure to hear Rebecca Penneys after so many years. We were students together and friends in the early 70's at Indiana University. At that time she was already a marvelous pianist with a considerable technique and a seemingly limitless imagination. She set her mind to learn from the particular strengths of each teacher. Her playing is marked by a keen musical intelligence, imagination, and good rhythm. As this release demonstrates, her amazingly clean technique serves her musicianship. Her interpretations are compelling, persuasive, and satisfying. Perhaps reflecting the strong influence of two Hungarians in her training pianist Gyorgy Sebok and cellist Janos Starker the 15 Hungarian Songs exhibit a remarkable rhythmic elasticity and persuasive declamation. Even more, they display a joy and playfulness. There was a time in Ms. Penney's youth, when she had to choose between ballet and the piano, having reached similar stages of expertise in both. So whenever there is the suggestion of dance in the music she plays, it becomes a prominent element of her interpretation. The four Chopin mazurkas here stomp, dance, and sway with exuberance, and become reflective as the music suggests.

If Chautauqua sounds like a blast from the past, it's the place in upstate New York where folks used to go in the nineteenth century to listen to lectures by Louisa May Alcott, Mark Twain, and their ilk. Later, it became the location of a flourishing art colony that exists to this day. If you had to troop up to Chautauqua to hear these piano gems, it would be well worth the excursion. Or, you can listen on CD to a program that begins auspiciously with the folksy charm of Bartok's Hungarian Peasant Songs, then the delicate sentiments of Mozart's Sonata in C Major, K. 330 plus four sprightly Mazurkas and the moody Polonaise Fantaisie by Chopin. But that's not all. Penneys follows with Debussy's picturesque Suite Bergamasque, including the ever-popular Claire de Lune, followed by two modern pieces by William Bolcom (Old Adam) and William Albright (Sleepwalker's Shuffle) that prove the gentle art of the piano rag is not mouldin' in the grave with Scott Joplin. Finally, two brilliant transcriptions by Franz Liszt of Robert Schumann songs close out the program in smashing style. Brava, Rebecca Penneys! This is the way the piano should be played and recorded.
