Extractions: Laurence Bitensky , composer and pianist, has gained wide recognition in the last few years with numerous awards and distinctions. Most recently, he has attracted attention for Awake, You Sleepers! , a concerto for trumpet and wind ensemble commissioned by the prestigious Fromm Foundation. Recognized by the Big Ten Band Directors Association, the piece was premiered by John Hagstrom of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Northern College of Music Wind Orchestra under the direction of Tim Reynish at the 2002 International Trumpet Guild conference in Manchester, England. The piece has subsequently been recorded by Hagstrom and the Syracuse University Wind Ensemble under John Laverty. Bitensky's orchestral work, A Perfect Rest , was recently awarded a special distinction in the 2002 ASCAP Rudolf Nissim Prize and was performed in March 2003 by the Princeton Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Mark Laycock. Willa J. Conrad of the Newark Star-Ledger described the work as "full of sensuous, snaking melodies based on Jewish chant, melodies that float and wind their way throughout the orchestral texture, eventually erupting into moments of full brass declamation." Other recent honors include the Kentucky Arts Council's 2001 Al Smith Artist Fellowship Award and an award from the Joyce Dutka Arts Foundation.

The Fromm Foundation is a respected sponsor of musical compositions, music concerts and concert series, among them the Tanglewood Festival of Contemporary Music. The mission of the foundation is to strengthen composition and to bring contemporary music closer to the public. One of last year's Fromm commission recipients, Melinda Wagner, received the 1999 Pulitzer Prize for Music. Bitensky also has received, for the fourth consecutive year, an award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. The ASCAP awards program encourages writers of serious music, with selection based on the scope of the person's original compositions and recent performances. In addition, Bitensky was commissioned by the Kentucky Music Teachers Association in 1999. The resulting work, "Mishb'rey yam," brought him recognition from the Music Teachers National Association as the "1999 Shepherd Distinguished Composer of the Year." The piece was performed at the MTNA convention in Minneapolis in April 2000. An accomplished pianist and composer, Bitensky has written music for a wide range of instruments and musical settings. A typical program also will feature at least one of the members of the group as a performer on one or more piece. Our principal artistic goals are to present high quality concerts of contemporary American chamber music, to feature a wide variety of aesthetic viewpoints and musical styles, and to do so in an atmosphere that is entertaining and enjoyable as well as intellectually stimulating. In fourteen seasons we have performed almost 400 works by more than 175 composers, including 145 world premieres. Each year we sponsor a composition competition that attracts entries from across the country and results in the performance of the winning composition(s) at our fi-nal concert of the season. Past winners include Judith Lang Zaimont, Jeffrey Stadelman, Marti Epstein, Paul A. Siskind, Madelyn Byrne, Laurence Bitensky, and Matthew Guerrieri.
