Extractions: [70'17"] budget-price by Ong Yong Hui The Waltzes by Chopin are not a very prominent series of pieces to listeners, and there are much fewer recordings of them than the famous Etudes or Nocturnes . There was the time when etudes ("studies") were simply finger exercises for the pianists or at most dazzling fireworks for the piano-bashing virtuosos like Liszt, as with his Transcendental Etudes . However, Chopin's poetic musical style gives his own Etudes an intimate touch that affected them, imbuing them with much more musical value. Similarly, his Waltzes, composed during the waltz craze in the late eighteenth century, transformed the dance music into something more delicate and gentle in accordance to his music style. "Look at these trees!" Liszt said, "The wind plays in the leaves, stirs up life among them, the tree remains the same, that is chopinesque rubato'. Liszt's illustration of Chopin's famed rubato touch coincides with the idea of the waltz form, where the bass have to play a steady beat to retain the rhythmic dance form while the "melodic lines should enjoy freedom of expression with fluctuations of speed". This clinical statement nevertheless proves to be true. The Waltzes express a wide gamut of ideas that ranges from boisterous dance movements to lyrical and smooth-flowing music. Yet with such a disparity, underlying these pieces is a strict waltz tempo and a concentration on the beat and meter which are perhaps not found in Chopin's other works.

His compositions, principally for the piano, make a remarkable use of the newly developed instrument, exploring its poetic possibilities while generally avoiding the more obvious ostentation of the Paris school of performers. Biret is well-known for her performances of almost all the symphonies and sonatas of Beethoven. Her last achievement is the recording of her second CD, part of the 32 sonatas series which is including op.57 "Appassionato" sonata of Beethoven. The CD was recorded with the support of the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality. Idil Biret gave a concert and attended an interview with the public in Izmir Art Centre, invited by Izmir Metropolitan Municipality. She started to play piano at an early age. Biret took her first piano lesson with Mithat Fenemen and with a special law made by Turkish Parliament she was sent to France when she was seven years old. Studied with Nadia Boulanger in Paris Conservatoire and graduated from piano, accompaniment and chamber music departments with first degrees. Biret gave numerous concerts all over the world and played with so many orchestras under the direction of famous conductors. At the first International Istanbul Festival, Biret played with Jewish, Menuhin, all the Beethoven violin and piano sonatas. Talking about the symphonies and sonatas of Beethoven, She said, "Of course there are some unknown or little known compositions for the piano. There are still little sonatas nobody touches. Every composer has unknown compositions."

Extractions: CONTENTS The Melodians Steel Band Orchestra will give the first folk music concert at Ankara's International Music Festival on May 2. The orchestra, which was established by Terry Noel in England 50 years ago, is also known as the Metal Percussion Group and consists of 20 musicians. Among 250 steel bands, the group is the most widely-traveled band in England. Although their music is made with only a single category of musical instrument, percussion, the band's repertoire is very rich. The percussion versions of Bach and Tchaikovsky would, no doubt, be quite interesting musical experiences. The band has attracted a lot of attention at other music events they have attended since they travel with a whopping 500 kilograms of instruments on board. You can see them in concert at 8:30 p.m. on May 2 in Saklikent. Tickets are TL 750,000 and are available at the Sevda Cenap And Music Foundation on Tunali Hilmi Cad. 114/26. The International Ankara Music Festival's first session came to an end on April 15. The second part will start on April 30 with an event attended by President Suleyman Demirel. The Poland National Radio Symphonic Orchestra will perform at the opening concert together with Idil Biret, the world famous Turkish pianist.
