Leonard Bernstein was something of a musical polymath. In the world of Western art music he enjoyed a worldwide reputation as a conductor and a composer. He was also a great communicator, and perhaps more than anybody else he was able to explain music (especially Western art music) to a wide audience. At the same time, he created music for the Broadway stage, and successfully integrated popular styles (especially jazz) into his musical vocabulary. His conducting career progressed rapidly, and he was closely associated with the New York Philharmonic (where he served as music director from 1958 to 1969), the Israel Philharmonic, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He was in demand throughout the world and was the first American to conduct at Milan's La Scala opera house. Through most of his career he was a passionate supporter of contemporary music, though in his later years he also turned back to older styles, especially the late romantics such as Mahler. Bernstein also used the podium as a way to popularize the music he loved. In 1958, he began a series of televised Young People's Concerts that brought symphonic music into the homes of Americans.

Born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, on August 25, 1918, Leonard Bernstein became one of the most important personalities in the musical world of the 20th century. After studying music and working as an assistant to Serge Koussevitzky, he made his professional conducting debut with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in 1943 when he stepped in to conduct for the ailing Bruno Walter. This was the beginning of a conducting career that led him to the heights of fame. He became the first American-born and trained Music Director of the New York Philharmonic in 1958 and developed long-lasting affiliations with many other orchestras, in particular the Vienna Philharmonic and the Israel Philharmonic. He also conducted at some of the world's leading opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera and the Vienna State Opera. Leonard Bernstein was also widely acclaimed as an interpreter of the works of others and as a composer. A champion of American music, he did much to make the works of Ives and Copland known throughout the world. With his "West Side Story", he set standards for the entire genre of the Broadway musical and often subsequently crossed the lines between light and serious music. Bernstein's dynamic conducting style made his performances unforgettable. His television series "Young People's Concerts" and numerous books introduced millions of people to classical music. This is a modern reworking of the Romeo and Juliet story for stage and film. He became assistant conductor of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, where a particular event gave him instant acclaim and a widespread following. Bruno Walter was to conduct a significant concert by the orchestra which was to be broadcast live on Radio. Walter was unable to fulfil this engagement and the principle conductor (Artur Rodzinski, who had appointed Bernstein) was away, and so Bernstein was called upon to fill in. He excelled at all of them," said a slightly perturbed Ken Meltzer, Pittsburgh Symphony community spokesperson. An unabashed admirer of Bernstein's, Meltzer referred to the dynamic musician alternately as "one of the great musical teachers of his era," "a first-class concert pianist," "a podium giant" and "among the top American composers" in his lecture, "The Career of Maestro Leonard Bernstein." The Oct. 18 lecture was co-sponsored by the Jewish Studies Program and the Israel Heritage Nationality Classroom committee. Meltzer punctuated his lecture with video and audio tapes of Bernstein's multi-faceted career, including his legendary debut as a conductor at age 25 when he filled in on a few hours' notice for the principal conductor of the New York Philharmonic. Meltzer said that Bernstein almost did not pursue music because his immigrant father, Samuel, opposed it. The elder Bernstein had seen musicians in Eastern Europe barely eking out a living, sometimes playing for change in the streets. No son of his would do that, Meltzer said. Samuel, who had a successful beauty supply business, tried to dissuade Leonard from studying music, actually forbidding his son from playing the piano at home. The young Leonard would sneak off to a neighbor's house to practice.
