The first time one watches this DVD of Michelangeli in concert (also released in Japan on BMG BVBC31007) the question that keeps on cropping up is Does he ever miss? He does, but very rarely indeed. This is an invaluable document of a great artist and the opportunity to watch him in close-up is not to be missed; if only to know that there is some emotion that however minuscule - registers across his mask-like features and that, yes, even Michelangeli sweats.

Extractions: I already tried so see Maurizio Pollini live three times in my life. All three times the concert was cancelled due to the artists's health problems. The same happened in January. On February 16, my chance came to see him. But then, the locomotive of the train bringing me to Zurich broke down. A delay became unavoidable. I had to change to another train. Arriving in Zurch, it had begun to snow. After a record sprint to the Tonhalle, Pollini had already started playing. He is a very sensitive pianist so I had to wait behind closed doors and listen from there to his rendition of the First Book of Debussy's Twelve Etudes for Piano . He just had started with part IV In sixths . After the First Book , the public applauded him generously and gave me the chance to slip unnoticed into the concert hall.

Extractions: Our price: Media: Audio CD Record label: Polygram Records Release date: 12 October, 1999 Average user rating: The playing on this release is stupendouseven for Michelangeli. Of course, as one expects from this pianist, there is fabulous technique: precise, minimally pedaled, with gorgeous tone. Interpretively it is even more impressive. The Schumann is unbelieveable. The Carnaval is the best in the catalog, outshining other Michelangeli performances as well as those by Solomon, Kempff, and Rachmaninov. Each piece in Carnaval is clearly and wonderfully developed, and the whole coheres unusually well. The Album fur die Jugend excerpts are at the same level. Here we have, in 8 or so minutes, a "Winterreise" that makes Schubert's seem fluffy and cheerful. I'd like to go on, but you get the idea. I focussed on Schumann because almost no one plays him well because almost no one is smart enough to do so. Not too bad at all Maurice Ravel, Sergey Rachmaninov and more - Ravel/Rachmaninov: Piano Concertos

Extractions: 'Michelangeli gives astonishing tonal variety to the Chaconne and brings out all its noble architectural beauty. The Brahms is simply magnificent. What a pianist! Technically the playing is astonishing; interpretatively, here is a very great musician.' (Gramophone) The Italian pianist Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli (1920-1995) is assured a place as one of the greatest of all pianists. Alfred Cortot, a member of the jury at the 1939 Geneva International Piano Competition, exclaimed 'A new Liszt is born!' when Michelangeli was declared the decisive victor. Though an enigmatic, unpredictable and controversial figure in his lifetime, Michelangeli's (not extensive) discography bears witness to his immaculate and sublime pianism. EMI's small legacy of the pianist's recordings includes some of his best: Rachmaninov's Fourth and Ravel's G major concertos from 1957 (already available as a Great Recording of the Century) and these 1948 recordings of Busoni's transcription of the Chaconne from Bach's second solo violin Partita and Brahms's virtuosic 'Paganini' Variations.

Interdisciplinary Categories Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli Pianist Hailed as the greatest technician of his time, Michelangeli often displayed a detached and dispassionate approach to music. Hecould be impulsive and willful and sometimes edited the music to suit his interpretation. But he also conveyed deep concentrationand communion with the spirit of the composer. His Debussy Preludes on DG 427391 arethe most successful example of this style. His highly personal approach is evident in his Brahms Paganini A live BBC Chopin Sonata no. 2, the Clementi Sonata b flat, opus 12, no. 1, and Ravel Beethoven Sonata no. 32, Scarlatti , and Galuppi Sonata on Decca 417772 are atypically idiosyncratic program. Extractions: EMI Throughout his life Claude Debussy struggled against the massive influence of Richard Wagner. One of the complete novelties of Debussy's music was that it rejected the thick textures of German music, turning towards the South and the Mediterranean for inspiration. Available on the EMI budget series "La Voix de son Maître", this album contains Debussy's three orchestral masterpieces: Nocturnes . L'Orchestre National de l'ORTF (today's French National Orchestra) turns in a distinguished performance under the transparent and remarquably committed direction of Jean Martinon. 2 CDs Deutsche Grammophon 449438-2 Several months after the death of Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli (1920 - 1995), Deutsche Grammophon reissued on two compact discs what originally had been released on three separate full price CDs. This new edition is thus excellent value for money. Rather than limiting these works to their French idiom, the ingenious Italian pianist glorifies their universal import. Michelangeli was the only pianist to dare to emphasize the occasionally monumental structure of this music. Worse still, to put his finger precisely on what Debussy owed to Wagner. Extractions: Philips Neither opera, nor oratorio, The Damnation of Faust is a "dramatic legend" that opera houses are deathly frightened to produce. It is French composer Hector Berlioz's most ambitious work. Sir Colin Davis , who has championed Berlioz more than any other conductor, knew how to grasp two essential components: visual invention and metaphysical reflection. If you are fed up with the Faust myth, try Romeo and Juliet , a steamy work even more difficult to pigeon-hole, with Seiji Ozawa leading the Boston Symphony Orchestra (Deutsche Grammophon).
